In theory (or at least that's how the tackweld mod is pitched), it should still collapse. Still... safety is #1 IMO so $180 bucks is nothing if we're talking about my chest impaling...

EDIT: A little more than 2 weeks later and the price has increased. Stock is +1 at their main facility in Dubai. 8 in other locations.

Unfortunately, the OP's welder didn't get that message and messy welded the whole thing.

Yup! he was not suppose to weld the entire column, only two small welds on the sides.

i just had them checked and they are at 100 lb/ft and
the rear is tight and nothing loose as far as the local mechanic can tell.

So after investigating the cause some more I ran into this part here, the inferior OEM rubber is shot. I am not sure if they make this piece in aftermarket Poly or any upgraded material. I had my mechanic replace it with a OEM Toyota part, I will test it tomorrow on the open road and let you know the results.

The rubber is not inferior. FFS it 20 years old and contended with the additional beating from your spacer lift.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I wonder why that part was painted, that's not something people usually see or ever put their hands on

The guy who my uncle (original owner) had taken the truck to painted the transaxle and tranny that color.

My truck feels "BRAND NEW", so the combination of the steering column universal joint replaced, the steering column weld mod, removing the 3" aluminum lift and replacing it with the Bilstein 5100's shocks all around, tires at 30 PSI did the trick, it's amazing how a combination of the right parts can make the difference in the world!
    Thank You , TW !!!

That weld is bad if you ever crash violently. Should only be two tacks

I know I am thinking of swapping it with my spare one that I got from the salvage yard for like $20
