Joel Klatt brought up a good point: why do conferences have their own refs? Why not more seemingly-neutral NCAA refs?

 

So we just finished up watching the game again. I noticed something that we missed when watching last night. After the final Michigan fumble and hot-potato play when the announcers declared the game over, there was that delay when the officials started looking at something. The commentator asks someone else in the booth "Any idea what they're looking at?".... The faint reply could then be heard... "Fuck no!"

 

I basically said the same thing. Then I saw the replay and instantly knew what they were looking for.

Do other college sports use conference specific refs/umps/judges??? (I honestly don’t know)

 

I believe all college sports do. I'm not sure but I also think some conferences have slightly differing rules from one another.

 

I wonder if bama will jump to #2 after the title game. LOL..

 

At one point there were slightly differing rules. I'm not sure if it is still that way. I remember years ago hearing the announcers commenting on this in some bowl game.

I tried a google search on this and I didn't find much, but found this one article from 7 years ago. Its short but it talks about the problem of offciating in college.

"We don't want officials flying all over the country."

It seems like that would be pretty easy to avoid. You can keep them to a region. But maybe they're officiating Michigan one week and Toledo the next. Then come post season, you could get a little more in-depth. I'm sure they were as impartial as they could be, but when the officiating is awful it opens up speculation and questions as to why officials from any of the involved conferences were allowed in the first place. No different than when officials from Michigan and Ohio are not traditionally allowed to officiate The Game. However, they made an exception to that rule in 2016 and allowed Ohio officials to officiate the game in Columbus which also had several questionable calls, including a 4th down play with a controversial spot that gave Ohio State a first down in overtime and they scored on the very next play. I'm not sure what conference officiated OSU v Georgia, but the SEC officials for Michigan v TCU were not good.

 

All they'll need to do to put this into effect is to get Nick Saban on board with it. If they promise him that when officials have to "call headquarters" for decisions on questionable plays, headquarters will remain Tuscaloosa... just as it is now. And the final decisions rest with him. Just as is does now for the SEC games. At least that's the standing joke around here . . .

 

We try not to say anything about that school from that certain state. Lets hope you didn't provoke the spirit of one of their fans to come on here to tell us how great it is to be hated this much, and how people still talk about them after a 2 loss season that failed to make the playoffs, how every program wishes they were them and yadayadayada. lol

LSU v Purdue must've been one of those contractually obligated matchups....ouch. Saw that coming though.

 

I definitely didn't give Tulane much credit despite their ranking. Definitely proved me wrong.
