I can’t really say anything about the value of the saw, but replacing chain is simple and a relatively cheap fix. I’ve got at least six chains for my saw. Fastest way to sharpen a chain is to put another one on. As for the saw, see if you can find any for sale in other places to get an idea of the used prices.

a Stihl 261 WILL NOT cost 1000 dollars - at least not in the USA. I do not know where you are getting these prices?

Did this a little bit ago. Plowing with the bucket got old because it’s so small. Found a 6 ft utv plow for 200 bucks and a quick detach plate for 100 bucks. We don’t get a ton of snow but enough to have to plow every storm so this should help some. See how long it lasts

don’t mind the paint. All my spray cans were frozen. Also added some plexiglass sides and back to keep some of the heat in. May make a door at some point too

It's practically free to them so yea...

It will probably do for them a season or two till they recover financially and get something like I have. Isn't a long term situation.

And yes, I am putting all the safety stuff back on it. They got younger kids so I can't in good conscious leave the safety switches and stuff off.

I have the Husky 545 with a 16 inch bar. It has the auto tuning so I never have to adjust anything. I've had it for about 6 years, never a problem. I would suggest that you get a saw that is 1 level above what you think you need. I feel that with power equipment a little more is better than wishing later that you had gotten something 1 level up.

WOW -either things cost alot more in Canada, or there has been huge increases in saw costs, I think my saw was about 675 or so here in Mo. (US), and that was with the 20 inch bar and the bigger size chain.

    $675USD = $916CDN

So your saw is still roughly in the ballpark with the conversion rates.

    The 20" 261 would cost me $996

I can only assume your sales tax is less than mine as well.

I was just comparing the MS 261 vs the MS 271 specs. The major differences are the MS261 is 1.5# lighter and has an extra 1/2hp. Both those numbers are small, but significant in the scale of the saws. Both being 50cc, it’s about 12% savings in weight and 14% increase in power. That’s important if you want to run the larger bar and chain combo.

If I have the money I’d buy the MS261, in the long term it’s going to be the better saw. In 10 or even 20 years, I’d be glad I dropped the extra coins. If money is truly tight or beer is just more important to life in Manitoba then I’d opt for the MS271.

    25 minutes.

But, unless a saw is MUCH cheaper I won't save much anything. Especially if it's just a trip to the depot. I'd pay conversion, tax, AND duty. It would cost me more unless I spend 48 hours in the US.

That’s a lot of coins, but I think it still comes down to the status of your wallet today. I don’t think you would regret spending the extra money in 20 years, but today you’ll be happy with either saw.

I can say inflation is a bitch because things only get more expensive over time, when I bought my 036Pro 27 years ago they were about $550, a comparable MS362 today is $880. :annoyed::spending:

You only have to pay the extra money if they know you bought it…

No inspector, that shiny new saw in back of my truck was there when I went to the US… :D :canada:

A good portion of my Craftsman tools were bought in Canada back in the day. With a favorable exchange rate, and the prices marked the same $19.99 as the US tools it was a killer deal.

Better yet find someone on this website that lives on the path and hook up with them for a "cutting party" Find some dead/downed wood that will make some dust --that will make it used!

Ha. If only. Unfortunately between me and the depot in North Dakota there are.....fields.

Regardles...I'd only save a few bucks across the border even if I didn't pay duty.
