PLEASE NO DRAMA AND NO POLITICAL ARGUMENTS -- IT IS WHAT IT IS!

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act contains text which requires auto manufacturers to add an "impaired driving detection device" that can remotely shut off your vehicle and prevent it from driving. Search for section "24106" (note: my SurfacePro6 browser crashes due to out of memory, prob need to view on a desktop, you have been warned): https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/3684/text

This post is to alert you about this and explore how they might accomplish this in our Tacomas and hopefully light a fire under the hackers' butts to give us a solution when these are implemented starting in 2026 -- yes, that soon. I'm sure my 2019 Tacoma already has something in it that allows remote monitoring of my driving habits, perhaps even remote monitoring of the sounds inside the cab, but I don't think it allows remote shut-off and I don't have OnStar or similar.

The devices are mandatory. All the bill vaguely says is that the device must "passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired" and "prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected." I wonder if such technology even exists...? Would this be code in the ECU that one of the tuners could overwrite? Would it be a hardware device that we could simply remove? Or would it be wired so deeply into everything that we are stuck with it?

I'm sure you can think of many scenarios where this is not a GoodThing(tm). I've driven drowsy before finding a motel or rest stop, for example, what if my car shuts down on the highway? In winter?? Uphill both ways??? How about when you teach your kid to drive, will the lesson be cut short? The list goes on and on...

As is often the case, this will potentially hit many that are not impaired.

Tacoma already has it, many cars do, the take a break coffee cup thing. Triggers when you set off driver aides too many times in a short period, lane departure for example.

    Also, this gonna get :locked:

They need to come up with something for people who impede the left lane.

when the coffee cup thing tells you to take a break does it limit your vehicles movement when this is set off?

I think your right that is the prequel. Other Toyota cars can move the steering wheel and read speed signs even so they could use the camera as the primary input.

If it’s embedded in the Toyota safety system then it won’t be easy to defeat. It may not even need any remote communication at that point.

Also I see someone getting sued for this when it causes harm. Like last month when it’s -30 below or on some interstate.

Wonderful. Not only do I have to pay for the roads, the vehicle, the gas tax, and the maintenance of said vehicle, but now they wanna take my freedom of *doing whatever the F I want with my property* in the name of public safety. Infringe me harder daddy. *turns down fire road with open gate, vehicle shuts off, message comes thru speakers saying 'this road is closed to all vehicles without government clearance, an officer will be around shortly to escort you out, please remain in your vehicle and secure all pets. There will be a $200 fine for dispatching, thank you'*. Oh it's gonna be wonderful lol.

Oops no political rants, my bad

Yep. In addition to 'time in seat coffee cup' you already see in 3rd gens..........

There is an Interlock breath-analyzer device that is often installed in vehicles of DUI offenders today. It does a facial scan while they blow in a tube, and will prevent the vehicle from starting if it doesn't like what it sees or smells.

It also records the time of day the attempts are made and if any feature monitored (breath, time, face) has a failure. The device has to be scanned, results uploaded to the state and reset every 3 months by the installer or the device will lock down the vehicle.

A judge would have ordered a period of monitoring (a year is common). Time of day is included because there may be a sub order that restricts driving times to certain hours (like to get to work and back). Any failure will generally extend the time of the monitoring.

The offender pays for the install, monthly rental and the quarterly resets.

    Predictions.
    1) Thread will be locked, some posters will get in 'trouble' for drifting political. ;)
    2) My '13 5 lug w/40k will easily take me another 20 years of driving and still be under 200k.
    3) Others will continue to realize simpler is often better, so the rising value of my 5 lug will support my nursing home years. :D

because its governmentally mandated does that provide companies with any type of legal out. I think of air bags and they can still be sued for those.

In Minnesota they have whiskey plates for all that get a DUI first offense, they start with the letter W and are on the vehicle 5 yrs, it gives officers the right to pull you over at anytime. While on the car all lights, wiper blades and washer fluid must be in working condition. 2nd offense in 5yrs you get a breathalyzer with or with out a camera installed. It disengages the the starter and calls the police if you are impaired or someone else starts it for you. It has GPS monitoring. I found out about the latter when working at a dealership. The person had multiple offenses and we had to let the person start the car after the oil was dropped and filled I guess the drove to several shops to find one that would allow. They started it but we drove it to and out the service bay.

This is for a person convicted of DUI not the general public so there is technology out there. My 21 has an onstage like feature so I think it could be set up fairly easy on newer models.
