Mud Flaps or Not?

I took my front flaps off because my tires rubbed ever so slightly, but would've left them on if I didn't rub. Didn't even occur to me to take the rear off, but leaving them on also seems like the courteous thing to do so I'm not flinging rocks at people behind me!

The price you are seeing are for the newer style with that weird mesh stuff at the top? Those weren’t even an option when I got mine, and at $225 for a PAIR, $450 a set, prob not worth it.

 

Yes, RekGen. I bought them on Amazon for $98 in 2018, for a full set of four. I see they are now up to $150 on Amazon.

 

Yup, same, I’ve had mine for 4 years now and paid right around $100 shipped. Even at their current price it’s been well worth it.

 

Yeah I was like 240 for 2 mud flaps? They better have a cold beer ready when I wash grime off. Just saw the others. That’s a hell of a lot better that 500 for flaps. SMH at my own inability to look further. Yeeesh.

 

Well, I removed the mud flaps today and like the look much better. The truck looks less squatty.

We had some snow in the last month and I had to drive on some gravel muddy roads. The OE mud flaps sucked. My tires are mild AT tires and stock size. My rear fender flares are chipped from cinders and gravel, and the sides of the truck were covered with snow and slush. Not what I expected with having mud flaps.

They may work for others but didn't for me.

 

Mud flaps look good on these trucks and they offer protection from debris is what I found. Especially combined with the aluminum running boards with the black plastic surface. I did rip one mud flap off while off roading. Replaced shortly after with a new OEM one.

In this state all vehicles sold are suppose to come with mud flaps.

 

I had the same combo on my 09. I just sold the truck last summer with just under 300K km's and the rockers still looked new. Around here where I live if I didn't have both of those my rockers would've been in rough shape.

 

It is the law in a few states.

I'm on my third windshield, because of all the daddies money 8" lifted 2500 trucks with no mud flaps, running all around i-10 in Tx.

And i stay waaaaay back from those fkers too.
Aggressive ass tread 37" mud tires will fling small rocks like a fking wrist rocket.

Not having flaps on the highway is just plain rude and selfish.

But I'm a total hypocrite... I don't have flaps because they all broke off.

Anybody suggest some decent options for replacements???

 

Most OEM flaps are too rigid and for those who go off road I'd look for some that are flexible (rubber or like) that will give with obstacles. B.T.W. staying back does not work, since the guy behind you sees the space passes you pulling back in line the instant he clears your front bumper... (instead of going ahead 100 yards).

 

I had to take the front ones off to clear larger tires. I leave my back ones on though. I’ve been hit with rocks on my windshield before and kept the back ones out of courtesy. If I was able to keep the front ones on, I would have. Now my steps and the side of my truck catch most of the dirt and the occasional rock.

Anyone know of a mud flap that doesn’t extend to the cab mount? What flaps are other people running with 33s and minimal clearance at the cab mount?

Also, in Oregon, the law says you need them on, but I see enough trucks out here without mud flaps to know it is not enforced.

 

They never enforce this law unless you cause someones vehicle a broken windshield, or you have an over zealous cop trying to make a name for themselves.

Going back to 1976 I've owned 16 trucks and SUV's. Since 1983 two or three at any given time since I drove one and my wife the other. The only vehicle I've ever owned that had mudflaps was my Tacoma bought new in 2007. The front ones broke off in 2010 after driving several hundred miles across Colorado in a snowstorm. The ice and snow build up was just too much for them. I took the ones off the rear and trashed them when I got home. I've been flapless for the last 13 years.

At least 95% of the other trucks/SUV's on the road here do not have mudflaps. Never had any damage from rocks hitting any of my trucks coming from my truck or others and I average roughly 1000 miles/year on gravel roads.

On a flatbed or other truck without fenders mudflaps make sense. On anything with fenders, they useless. If you're having problems with rocks chipping paint it is because your tires are wider than your fenders. You need fender flares, not mudflaps.

 

I was wandering around home depo, looking for a good tough rubber like material to make my own. I was trying to find the heavy-duty horse mat type material, but didnt see it.
