Monopoly can either be complete ownership or sufficient for control. The government looks both at market share and what you do with it. I was using the Game definition :anonymous:
If Standard Oil was one how is Spacex’ dominance of the US rocket market not a monopoly “yet”? They are already a monopoly, it just remains to be seen whether he can refrain from acting as one.

“How the U.S. Determines a Monopoly
A monopolistic firm is legally defined as a firm with "significant and durable market power." In other words, the ability to raise prices without long-term consequences or the ability to exclude competitors. To be deemed a monopoly, a firm or group of firms must generally have at least 50% of the sales for its product or service within a geographic area, although some courts require a far higher percentage. This dominance of the market must also be maintained over an extended period to be deemed monopolistic.

The courts use antitrust laws to determine when a company is operating as a monopoly. They first look at whether a company has monopoly power in a market by studying the products it sells and what alternatives are available to consumers if the company were to raise prices.

The courts then investigate how the company has maintained its leading position to determine if it was through improper conduct rather than having a better product or management practices. It's legal to become a monopoly by providing a better product, but illegal to create a monopoly through exclusionary or predatory practices like supply chain agreements.”

They already are a duck, they earned that status legally, all that remains is whether it starts acting like one. It might gall Musk to launch Amazon satellites to orbit but it would be dangerous not to. It would underscore his control of too many pies.

You cannot run the government like a corporation.

When our government contractors finish the job I can always tell that lowest bidder won the contract.

It’s amazing how influential corporate colonies were in getting to where we’re at today.

One example- think Plymouth Colony in 1620.

Also, thanks for the shallow dive on monopolies :hattip:. Kinda scary..

Just found this from last week. I’ve heard contradictory reports about this launch either containing or not containing Gen 2 Starlinks. If they were in fact Gen 2 and they sent up 51 in an F9, then that would seem to make Gen 2 delivery less dependent on Starship :notsure:

My apologies, I believe you are correct. I’ve read too many sci fi novels and seen too many movies using this back drop. Alien, Outland, The Expanse, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, etc. I do think it’s a valid question since much has been made of colonizing the moon and Mars and the infrastructure but nothing else. It’s a topic that needs consideration but not here.

I thought it was a compromise version that was in some way less capable.

From 57 launches at Kennedy/CCSFS in 2022 to 87 projected this year, it starts today. I'm on the Space Force side today I'll have a great seat for launch/landing but I'll be in a facility that is very strict no phones/no pics.

I was outside I did not see it land. The EPF was blocking my view looking northeast. Beautiful day great view. Still doesn't look real. Sonic boom on re-entry was extremely loud due to me being surrounded by a large structure.
