I had posted this somewhere along the line.
Countries that already can't feed their population and suffer famines are supplied with food aid, eventually they will go from 30 million people who don't have enough food to 60 million people who don't have enough food!

 

Well, there are people like myself who believe future wars (true next storms) may occur over the scarcity of potable water. We can do without a lot of things, but living without clean water is not one of them. One of my worries is over the safety and security of our water sheds.

One of my guilty pleasures is almonds. My understanding is that almonds take crazy amounts of water to farm. And this year, the record low-levels of the Mississippi caught my eye.

 

Oh yeh, they require a lot of water. I read that it takes 1900 gallons of water to grow 1 lb of almonds. (I too like almonds)

 

I've heard claims like that about other crops and especially about raising livestock. Some are ridiculous and I know it, but others I don't know enough to have anything other than light skepticism. I suspect the number, 1900 gallons, is inflated or misapplied. Almonds come from the Middle East and grow in hot, dry climates. It makes no sense that those amounts of water would be required to grow a single pound of almonds. There must be missing context or sensationalized numbers.

Alan, I respect you and I respect your decision not to personally harvest mammals, birds and fish yourself. I’ve been a hunter and fisherman my whole life and I know no ethical hunter actually kills for “fun”. The hunt, the camaraderie of the hunt, the eating of the harvest and many other parts is fun but the actual bullet to the bone kill is not fun as you put it. It is simply a necessary part of the hunt.
While you may not kill animals, birds , fish, you are simply having others kill for you. All the meat, chicken etc you eat someone killed it for you. And if you have pets someone is killing other animals to feed your dogs or cats so they may live. so please don’t think that we hunters get some joyous glee from the actual kill. But again it makes no difference to me whether you hunt and kill animals or not.

 

And let's not forget that a vegan kills far more animals for every pound of food they ingest than a meat eater.

What ever the number is, the fact is that almond trees use a tremendous amount of water per tree. You can research this in a number of places but even the internet multiple sources will show the extreme amount of water required to grow almonds.
I’ve seen higher numbers for a pound of almonds than the 1900, but again what ever it is it’s a lot.

 

Just stating facts. So far we are all playing nice, being respectful.

 

I enjoy reading what folks here do in their lives, and if it’s hunting, fishing, being vegan, so be it. I wouldn’t want anyone to “self-censor” their lives if a totally allowed topic is involved.
So I hope what you mean Mike is we shouldn’t argue over such topics, or condemn others if we don’t agree with what they do (assuming lawful, and not against TW TOS). I’m all for respect here and hope I’ve given that to you fine folks!
Note: I’m much better behaved on this TW thread due to the good examples you gents (and ladies) provide, and a bit more of a curmudgeon (though a friendly one …most of the time lol) other threads.

I think we’re all well aware of the problems caused by the population explosion, and we all, including myself, have glib excuses for the good life we currently live, at the expense of future generations. There is no easy answer to any of this, the piper must be paid, and will be paid with high interest and stiff penalties.

Just thinking out loud here... but all trees require plenty of water just to stay alive. I wonder what the difference is between a tree similar to an almond that doesn't produce a crop, and an almond tree? Wouldn't the difference between the two be "how much water is required to grow a pound of almonds?" Is the water involved to grow the almonds, or to keep the tree alive? Is there a difference? Are we counting the water to grow the tree to maturity? I could see that, but it seems kind of wrong since I could have grown any other tree with the same water. Is there a difference in where the water comes from, rain or ground or irrigation or... ? Context... Popular opinion... Science... Exaggeration... Agendas... In the end I guess it's about what makes sense to me because I'm asking the questions.
I know it takes about ten gallons per minute to irrigate an acre of alfalfa over 18 hours. That's one time. That's a lot of water too. And alfalfa has deep roots.
Maybe it's a matter of perspective.

Oh man, I'm beginning to regret asking about the weather...

 

A clarification on the rain filling the reservoirs: this is true, and reservoirs do need to be lowered to allow future filling, but full reservoirs in winter don’t fulfill the need the rest of the year. Snow melt is required to finish the job. It doesn’t always happen that way, but it does look like we’ll have the snow pack this year.
Extreme weather conditions happen in many places, I’m just thankful that we in the West are spared the catastrophic conditions that plague much of the rest of the country.

 

Fun fact: California produces 80% of the worlds almonds and 100% of U.S. commercial production. And everybody knows that water supply is not an issue in California, right?
