Suspension too soft???

Hey guys just curious if anybody else has experienced this. I just got a new tacoma sport package with the Trd lift (so I think it’s bilstein suspension) and if I load up with 4 people and a little bit of gear in the back I actually have bottomed out a few time driving on the highway on uneven stretches of road.

it seems to me a truck shouldn’t bottom out on bumps just because you have a few people with you lol

It isn't that the suspension is soft, it is that the rear springs are overloaded... the maximum capacity of the Tacoma is your camping gear or your passenger's... you can not have both.

 

Something seems off. Unless a little bit of gear means 500lbs of lead shoes

 

This, and those lift blocks don't exactly help.

 

People are heavier than gear. This is pretty normal for mid sized vehicles.

The trade off with upgrading the leaf springs is it rides much rougher unloaded.

You could ditch the rear block and put an add a leaf in. Typically they add similar lift as a block and it will handle the extra load better.

How do you it’s hitting the bump stops as opposed to just being a stiff pickup leaf spring suspension? Also how are you driving it?

Thanks for the responses guys. No unfortunately I didn’t have any big ol heifers in the back lol just 3 170 pound dudes. And the gear probably added up to 150 pounds in the box.

the bumps in question are just your average frost heaves you’ll find anywhere in central Alberta. Driving steady at 100km/hr.

I think I just need to remind myself that a tacoma is not a truck but just a car with a box lol

Strange, I have 300lbs tongue weight, 200 of gear in the bed, and me, my wife, and two large dogs, and I've never bottomed out, not even on some rough roads. Stock leafs

 

Payload of your truck with NO modifications is only 1,135 lbs. Let's assume you, the 4th dude is also 170lbs. That's 680lbs. Plus wallets, phones, shoes, jackets, etc. Let's say 700lbs. That leaves 435lbs for your gear, upgrades, skids, bed mat, tonneau, bigger/heavier spare tire, etc.

Check your payload rating. It ranges between 1000-1300 lbs on a 4X4 DC. Four skinny adults is 600 lbs. Four adult men can easily be 800-1000+. That doesn't leave much for gear. This is one downside to Tacoma. Just for reference, my son's Honda Fit has 800 lbs payload. My Ford Explorer has 1500.

I have a simple add a leaf but the progressive icon would be a lot better ride. It will do 1.5” but will sag with time.
