Ehh dust collection is more of a suggestion :rofl:

I run my planer and jointer without one. Wish I had one but just haven’t invested yet

Once you finally get one you'll wonder why you waited so long to get one. I went without for years too, now I'll never be without one.

I finally got some time in the shop today, not to make anything but it still felt good just to be in the shop.
I spent a lot of time just cleaning up and putting things away, the work bench and outfeed tables where just covered with stuff.
Then I waxed the table saw tables.
    20230102_162206.jpg
Then I noticed the dust collector drum was almost full so I emptied it, now when I get time to actually make something I won't have to worry about it.
20230102_164535.jpg Then I found some 3/4" round bar to make some cutters for a new to me used Trent Bosch hollowing rig I aquired. I'll probably make a couple different sized tools for carbide cutters. Now I just need to machine the end for the carbide cutter and come up with something for a handle.
Obviously it doesn't get used with Cole jaws, lol.

It felt good to just be in the shop. I've been working so much over the last year that there just hasn't been any shop time. 12 hour days just wipe me out. And when your tired that's not when you should be in the shop with power tools.

Even the $300 Harbor Freight dust collector is 100% better than nothing. Cleaner shop, cleaner air and cleaner lungs.

You're so correct and your set up is so awesome without spending $1000's !

Glad you were able to get back in the shop!

It’s next on the list. For now it’s a shop vac and a respirator.

Amazon had one on sale that was nearly 200 bucks off but I had dumped 3k on a Disney trip for the kids plus it was Christmas time. I’m gonna wait til the wallet isn’t crying then buy one

All understandable. They do make adaptors to go from the Planer or the Drum Sander to a Shop Vac.. but there's just no comparison from a Shop Vac to a Dust Collector on things like a Planer or a Drum Sander.

You can definitely use a Shop Vac on smaller tools like Palm Sanders and small Band Saws etc.

Planing to to create a flat equal thickness surface. It helps to create accurate joinery. It makes a good glue joint for cutting boards but drum sanding does as well.

I would suspect the sanded joint would be the stronger glue joint as there's more "grip" for the glue.

Obviously, I am no expert. I would plane the joints so they fit then lightly sand for better adhesion.

The clamps should be used to hold it together while the glue dries, but they shouldn't be needed to force the wood together. Hopefully that make sense.

It doesn't matter. Glue is stronger than the lignin bonds in wood no matter what orientation. Just keep your clearance tight (4 thousandths) and you are golden.

Glue doesn't actually work the way it seems it should. Get all bored and study on it. Its a pretty crazy science.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
From someone who has both, I would take the planer over the sander. The Dewalt mentioned previously has a fine setting (slower feed rate) which leaves a great finish as long as there are no Knicks in the blade.

You will still need to finish sand off of the drum sander regardless of the Grit of the belt.

Lie Nielsen tools are outstanding. The woodcraft 5 1/2 is significantly less and man it is a fine tool. I can create glass smooth faces that are better than sanded. I wish I had bought it years ago.

Appreciate all the responses. Would love to have both in an ideal world but it sounds like a planer will get me further and can hand/orbit sand any end grain pieces in the meantime
