2009 2.7L Tensioner Pulley:Bearing Replacement

I looked around before posting this and it doesn’t seem like anyone’s asked. I believe that the bearing on the pulley for the serpentine belt tensioner on my vehicle is bad based on its discoloration, wobbling, and the excessive noise.

At NAPA you can actually buy just the pulley/bearing without having to buy the entire tensioner assembly. My question is: does anyone know if this is something like a wheel bearing that is likely to require a puller to get it off? Because if it requires a puller, then with the likely amount of disassembly labor to get that in-between the pulley and the fan blade, it would not be worth getting just the pulley instead of the entire assembly. However if these are simpler bearings because they are lower torque then I would prefer just to get the pulley because it’s cheaper.

That is the assembly. I’m told that you can buy just the pulley with the bearing and so my question is about what type of difficulty can be expected trying to slide the pulley off with the congestion in the area.

Buy Toyota tensioner and idler pulleys, only and good catch!

 

Most times I just remove the complete assembly and just replace the bearing.

The pulley comes right off unless the bearing has completely failed and things got really hot.

I have never attempted this job on the vehicle. I have no idea if it is even possible.

 

My question is what is the challenge of getting the pulley off? I know you can take a bolt off but frequently, with a lot of things (like wheel bearings for example), you need to use a puller tool. I’m wondering if most common versions of such tool are not going to fit in between the pulley and the radiator fan, which might make buying the pulley/bearing alone a bad idea.

 

pulley is held on by the bolt,,,,,,,,,,,,,unscrew bolt pulley falls off~!!!!!!


Edit; the bolt on the 4.0 tensioner is left hand thread, not sure about the 2.7 but check.

 

Unless the bearing has** failed completely which means it is reduced to nothing** and welded fast to the bolt in which case you throw every thing away. By this point your belt has burned off.

The pulley comes right off it might need a tap after being on years .

Im not familiar with the 2.7L
But the 4.0 is a left hand thread bolt.

Do you know if the 2.7 is?

 

One of those things I would remember looking at the engine.

Off the Top of my head my guess would be it is as well.

Going by the thread should be opposite of the engine rotation .

 

On the 2.7 it is not left handed thread
