I just cant get on the pecker boat..ive never seen one rip bark like that. Id agree with a pecker coming in after another animal ripped the bark off tho.

    A few.
I’m not saying it’s not possible, but that a lot of damage for a woodpecker. I’m going to stay with the porcupine.

    Edit…
The damage down low near the ground as well. That seems more like a porcupine, haven’t seen many woodpeckers doing their thing down low.

I'm with ya. I've watched woodpeckers beat their head against trees many times, but they usually end up just creating a hole.

    Side note:
Was hunting the other day, had a pileated land close to me.....those fellers are huge!!

i shot on with compound bow and arrow stuck in it, no pass througho_O

is it green or is it rotted? If its rotted most likely a wood pecker, if its normal tree then porcupine.

Ok, i looked at the last pic in the series and it seems that there is a few holes...however im standing ground on the porky...with later a pecker came through for some easy picking.

Okay, earlier I quickly looked at the photos and commented. I didn't even consider porcupine. I think @Twolines is probably right. I'm not seeing the little tunnels or pathways beetles create. Also the photos of the damage at the bottom of the tree was done in a few minutes or so, not over weeks by beetles, even then the bark wouldn't come off like that and be alive. I googled porcupine damage to trees and found several photos that look like what we got here. No way this is solely done by woodpeckers. I'm on team porcupine. I'll send the photos to my arborist friend and report back.

Ok, do a quick google of "porcupine tree damage" compare. There are a lot of pics that resemble the damage.Screenshot_20230102-165241_Chrome.jpg

All this talk of poking and peckers has me wondering if I'm in the right thread.
