x2 I have never been bothered, and I have never been in any trouble what so ever. In fact I am the only person I know of that has stayed completely sober through high school and college. Now my friends the ones that have over brearing parents are the ones who have been in trouble. Most of them drink heavily and drive. They wanna have fun but are afriad to tell their parents since they will be grounded for a year.

IMO all kids are taught from an early age to get respect you have to give it. When their parents don't respect them, then they don't respect their parents wishes.

IDK about that. Im 16 and have never drank or done any of that other shit and my parents let me do what i want for the most part and i just choose not too. But I know a lot of kids at my school who have parents on both sides of the fence and still do that mess. so i guess the point is you have to teach them to make good descisions earlier in life than middle school.

I notice that about 16 is the age that shit starts going down. Kids are old enough to drive and get away from their parents easily. Mid junior through senior year you will most likely see the serious decline.

ill step in from the other side of the spectrum

my parents are good folks, but way restrictive when i was in high school ..... once i was home from school, unless i had to go to church youth group or walk my lab, or went to ride my mtn bike, i was in .... and i had damn well be in by dark or dinner time whatever came first

no late nights on the weekends either, in by 10pm

when i left the house at 22 to go to college, i went buck wild .... drinking all the time (which i dont see as too bad since i graduated) ... but i still had my hobbies and i wasnt getting so drunk that i was worried id blow over the limit the next day driving a car.

then after some jobs, due to the bad economy i had to move back in at 25

would drink now and then, but had it somewhat regulated

then i lost the temp job i had in late october last year

started drinking ALL THE TIME .... im talking id get some sidework that would start at 8am and id leave and go to the bar first at 7am

finally this past sunday, i blacked out around 3pm, didnt come home for dinner ... monday shit hit the fan ... folks knew i been bad for a while, and basically said youre kicked out if you dont cut it out

what sucks from my perspective is i would like to still be able to have a few beers every now and then, but currently that doesnt seem to be an option ... and with my unemployment about to be cut off im not about to blow my savings in the interest of being a rebel, otherwise ill be under a bridge or would possibly consider taking my life when i ran out of money for my own place seeing as they said if i did take the leave home route without gainful employment, i can NEVER go back

so im on day 5 off the sauce so far .... i dont sleep good ... i have the shakes .... but i think yesterday was the pinnacle cause i felt a lot better today, even though i still had the incling to cheat and go have a beer around 3 ... then dug the whiskey i threw out out of the recyling then poured it out before i did something dumb

anyhow a little ot but i had to vent a bit over here .... i hope to one day get back to moderation .... set a limit of 2 beers a day or something ... and if i wanna go out on a friday or something .... ill ration and maybe not drink wednesday or thursday .... and im staying away from the hard liquor most likely for good cause that seriously accelerated my downward spiral.

    quoted for the truth.

My parents are divorced. My dad was like that. Smothered the hell out of me. Luckily I was able to go to my mom's house and make myself halfway normal there until I went back to my dad's. I ended up packing my shit and taking off out of his house one night. to this day, I do not see him much. We get along but I only see him for very short increments.

I don't disagree with parents searching the room or just sitting back and hoping for the best, and I don't agree with parents teaching there children right from wrong by beating them. There is somewhere in the middle that is different for every kid and every parent. My parents luckily found the happy middle that didn't keep me from doing bad things, but taught me enough to one day wake up and realize I was wasting my life making a living just for drugs. Jail didn't do it for me, it was just one day waking up and thinking I wanted better for myself.

Most important to me is to know your children. If signs indicate drug or alcohol use, damn straight your priviledge of privacy is taken away. I will not sit back and watch a downward spiral for the sake of him or hers sense of privacy or learning a lesson. You can invade their privacy now and prevent an issue or you can find the stash after their dead. I could not live with myself if it is the latter. Make them aware of the balance and then go with your gut.

Like wise now, but that wasn't what made me go clean. At the time it was no big deal (of course I was too high to remember most of it).

Being a dad is...being a dad. Not a buddy, they have enough of them. I do respect boundaries, but with regards to the " new shit"....I have to educate myself. I wouldn't know a bath salt even if he were to show it to me. But by being dilligent in my efforts to see my kids grow and prosper...I do know ..now.

When I was a teen, my parents had no idea what ecstasy or special k were. I remember calling them vitamins and supplements..it was believeable to a naive parent , because of the odd stamps they used to have.

This is a worthwhile debate. I do see the other side of it. But ask a parent who had to bury their kids if they would do things differently....givin a second chance.
