Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    New ones are chinese junk.

I like this one, but I wish you could see the bottom.

This is one looks ready to go.

This is also a very nice one. It does look like it has some heavy pitting from rust previously. Other than some blade work and possibly sole work, it is very clean.

You'll like the one with the corrugated sole, they slide easier and are less sticky.

Yeah that's years of collecting. I have nearly all of the Stanley Bailey planes. Funny thing is I only use a couple, the rest are just part of the hobby or obsession or whatever you want to call it. Some people do it with guns, I did it with handplanes it seems.

What is the rationale behind having so many? Do they all have a different function?

I think he explained it. I read it as “because I could.”

They do have different functions. But as captamerica said it's because I could. I'm just a collector. There's only a few that I use on a regular basis

Ain’t nothing wrong with that. There’s far worse things to collect…and only a few cooler.

Yes. To flatten a board, you start with the longer planes and work your way down towards the shorter ones.

I guess, what is the purpose of having all of the different types of flat planes when they all do the same basic function?

If you want a workout push one of those 22" jointer planes across a board or a workbench glue up until its flat.

The soles usually aren't flat or square. They also tend to be thinner (note the ribbing they added; that's to add strength to a thinner sole). The blades are thinner and not as good. The plastic handles.

You can buy replacement blades from Lee Valley though.

Also, I wouldn't shy away from and Old OHIO or Miller's Falls plane either.
