It's not the ADD delete that gives me pause, it's hacking into factory wiring.... thought it would be cool just to replace the factory 4wd ecu and make this modification easily reversible. Fair point though about the weak point being the ADD if the tcase is replaced.

it’s literally 2 wires to get to to full manual capability. The dash indicators. Easily reversible.

Or he could just unplug the 2 wires coming from the ecu and insert the 2 wires directly coming from T case to the headcluster. Thats what i did and works like a charm :)

So, near the Ecu, you just took the No. 2 and No. 3 (4L and 4wd indicator) from the tcase and ran that wire to the respective indicator on the dash? I am assuming the Ecu is unplugged /not needed

IDK man i had a prerunner and did a conversion but its the same. Just unplug the pins that are in the spots and cap them. Yes at that point the ECU would not be needed for 4x4

When you say dash lights do you mean 4x4 indicator lights?

    Correct.

remove the tcase sensors, cap, and remove 4x4 ecu, and there will be no indicator lights? Just will need to look at the tcase for 4x4/neutral indication?

so you dont want the lights? All you would need to do is remove the sensors wires in the head cluster and they would go away.

Yes, see the red and white wire in my pic. Thats all you would need to disconnect. Yours will be diffrent color as i had no wires so i just used my own.

Do these two rods (that travel in/out of the case when the shift lever is moved) engage anything in the transmission? Or is the usefulness limited to what occurs inside the t-case? Picked up this case from a 2010 4runner automatic. 20221222_181306.jpg

They don’t do anything inside the transmission

Picked up a used Tcase. Took off the shifter assembly (undid 4 bolts on top) as well as the filll and drain plug, the shone a flashlight inside. Looked clean inside. Didn't see any chunks of metal or shavings etc. Case has 130k km or 81k miles on it. There wasn't a lot of gear oil in the case, but I'm assuming the wrecker I bought it from drained it before removal.

I don't want to split the case unless necessary. Anything to check before I put into service.... or just bolt 'er up and see what happens?

I would just cycle through the different modes and ensure it all works as it should. You can spin the output flange with your hand while you do it.

Had some spare time and some scrap steel. Welded up an adapter to hold the tcase with some basic adjustment so the tcase can be leveled out. When I eventually get around to installing this in warmer weather, will weld the adapter to something that can be attached to my jack.

I wouldn’t be too worried about it. You got a pretty low mile case. Mine had well over 250k kms, so while I had it apart for the twin stick I re did some gaskets and stuff just to make sure. Just got a rebuild kit from toyota for it.
