    Avg consensus around here......at 5K.....

If you do lots of highway miles you can stretch that out maybe 1.5x, or more.....

But for me, nothing but stop and go traffic.....ugh....
so every mile on mine is met with an equal amount of idle....

So I do 3K and under......

Same with all the other fluids on it.....change more frequently....
and buy the highest quality I can......

And same here....I only put about 7K on it a year.......

I put in a 1/3 qt of the synthetic lucas with each 4qt change.....

That’s what’s got me concerned with my 10k oil changes.

I meant to ask him what oil he uses. Honestly it’s probably all Toyota. He bought a brand new crate engine for it, one of like only 3 remaining, it came from a dealer in Dubai.

Wasn't that the days of 7500 mile for "normal use" and half that (3750 miles) for severe use? If you read what constituted severe use, it was pretty much all use. I used to change regularly at 3k miles, which was often as every month when I first got her. But now, I change every year, and that may be less than 250 miles.

I don't think oil type or change interval (if following normal guidelines) creates carbon buildup.

Plugs that are worn and create incomplete combustion, clogged PCV systems and EGR systems and bottom level fuel with inadequate additives are heavy players. Now if he was well maintained these items are probably unlikely, since they also tend to create driveability issues.

Weeping valve guides allowing unburnt fuel to seep in and normal cylinder wear allowing excessive blow by of crankcase gasses are much more suspect contributors in this case. Because 450k. As in just worn out.

I'd say he got his money's worth. And you shouldn't panic over your maintenance routine.

I change the oil in my 3RZ every 8-10K miles with 5w-30 Full Synthetic. Engine currently has 348K miles and runs fine. Don't know what the insides look like though.

I just change mine every year or so with whatever the cheapest oil is. I put less than 3k on it every year.
