What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

mine is smooth! But good point on the rebuild and having to change them out. Although my last rebuild cost $1100

 

If you have that HG stuff clogged in your thermostat, I'm willing to bet the propeller fins of your water pump maybe be gunked too. And radiator too at this point.

 

To be fair I just like the soft topper look, you can do it in a contrasting color where as a hardshell looks "cheap" in anything but body color. Functionality wise I don't know that I will ge much use out of the removability of it since I will be putting a bed rack around it.

 

Glad you found the plug and got that fixed, but I am willing to bet that everything @ToyRyd04 said is potentially correct. The head gasket sealer stuff may have gunked up your coolant system.

I don’t have the time to rip all that apart again. What’s the consensus on coolant system cleaner? Or can that clog up just like HG sealer? I feel like it wouldn’t, then again I’ve been wrong before.

 

Back flush the heater core to start, then flush the radiator (garden hose) the. Use distilled water and proper cooling system cleaner and run a few cycles of that’s tuff through. Bout as good as it’ll get

 

Gonna try to burp and drive down the street a few more times. If no luck I’ll be doing this. Thank you.

 

how did you fill the coolant?

I always start with the engine and fill it using the top radiator hose first to get the block as full as possible. Then attache the hose to the rad and fill it.

I’m using a wide funnel that does essentially the same thing. Just pouring it all through the radiator cap opening.
Could this be a clogged coolant temp sensor?
Or could part of my ecu just gotten damaged from the water it had in it.

 

How bad is this intake?

Took it off to do the fuel filter relocation and remove the injectors to have them refurbished. Gonna get this cleaned up and replace the gaskets while it’s out.

 

looks pretty gunked up. Not the worst I've seen but A catch can would help a bit with that once you clean it.

Anyone know of any deals for an OEM steering pump

 

Think I got mine from McGeorge for just under $300. The remans I tried all sucked/leaked so just said screw it and bought an OEM.

Not awful, pretty common for a lot of miles. You don't have to clean it but I don't blame you for wanting to. Depending on how much effort you want to put into it, xylene makes that stuff just come off.... but it is nasty shit to have around.

 

Pulled my starter. I was planning to rebuild it, but it looks like a generic reman, so now I'm wondering if I should spend a bit extra and get a Denso reman.

Looks like $160-ish for the Denso vs maybe $60 or $75 for OE brushes, plunger, and contacts. Generic parts would obviously be cheaper, but I don't know how the quality compares in this case.

Anybody have any strong arguments one way or the other?

 

If you're gonna spend the money on a replacement one, spend it on the cold weather package one.
