Hello! I have a 2001 Tacoma and the 4x4 system isn't working. It has the J-shift style. When moved into 4H, no light comes on and it doesn't go into four wheel drive. What could be my issue? I have cleaned the connections on the transfer case. Could it be the actuator? Thank you!!

I can move the shifter easily. No grinding noises. It just doesn't engage. And no lights turn on.

If your speedo is working, that rules out VSS. Did you check your fuse? What about the position switch? ADD or manual hubs?

    According to the wiring diagrams.
The 4WD indicator light is turned on when the ADD is in 4WD.
I’m not as familiar with the 1st hens, but going by the diagrams, it seems you have a problem with the ADD or the wiring between the ADD. The ADD provides a ground path to turn on the light for the 4WD indicator.
It might even be a problem with the ADD motor wiring, limit switches, or the ADD as a whole.

I see you've mentioned cleaning the connectors on the transfer case. Have you done the same to the connector on the ADD? Following on from @TnShooter it's the next step. Does the light blink at all?

I fixed it! All I needed to do is hit the actuator with a hammer (I used the back of an adjustable wrench). It loosened up the forks in there and now it works perfectly!!
