I already bought a set of cooper AT3 XLTs. So far so good, quiet and better MPG than my old tires

I have a question for those of you who run the Open Country AT3’s…

Can anyone tell me if the OWL version of the tire (285/75/16 specifically) has a side with plain black lettering?

I want the OWL version since it’s a true 33 and the black sidewall version is not (per Toyo’s website) but I can’t find any info on whether both sides have white lettering or not. Pics from the Toyo site for reference.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, OWL on one side Black on other. These 16's are made in Japan and have the less aggressive sidewall.. just so you're aware.

Thanks so much, that’s exactly what I was looking for.

I did not know that about the less aggressive sidewall, I really appreciate the info.

I think all of the OWL ones are made in Japan too with the less aggressive sidewall. Even the LT ones. Tire rack shows a country of origin when you pick a size and then click specs. I just checked the OWL LT265/70 and LT285/70r17 and they are both Japan. The BSW of the same sizes are US.

Tire Rack also states they can't guarantee a country of origin. Hopefully, they are from Japan though as I think these will be my next set. White letters out.:crapstorm:

Considering the AT3s anybody run SL on these tires? Any reason not too? I only wheel occasionally and drive gravel/dirt roads semi regularly.

Is this true for the SL loads? I thought all of the SL's had non aggressive sidewalls...so for example a BSW 265/75/16 SL will have a more aggressive sidewall than OWL 265/75/16 SL?

I was in the same situation. I’m running the SL’s. For my needs I’m very happy. One size up from stock. 1 MPG drop. If I was wheeling hard I’d consider an E-rated tire.

    I'm temporarily running P265/70/16 AT3's in SL.

I'm planning on upgrading to 285/70/17 soon.

My SLs didn't last as long as I would have thought. That was my only gripe about them.

Just got my AT3s put on yesterday so far I love them but I also didn’t drive my truck for a week so really happy to have it back.

I guess I will be making a sale post for my stock full size spare Wrangler with Kevlar. What’s a fare price for 1 tire with like 60 miles on it?

I may have missed it in the many pages of this thread, but has anybody compared the handling and treadwear of ATIII LT vs P/SL?

Background: I have 265/65/17 XL, and I like them but I want to step up. 5.29 gears so I’d like a slightly taller tire to balance the gearing out. LT255/75/17 C has my attention because it’s C range, but I’m a bit concerned about the wet handling and treadwear being that the LT tread has less siping and the siping it does have is not as deep. It rains a lot in Texas and so I need decent traction. The SL/XL/P tread works great for that.

If I don’t go 255/75, I’ll likely go 265/70R17 SL, which is just a hair smaller (and considerably cheaper). I just thought it would be nice to have the durability of a C load, the cool looking sidewall, the slightly larger size, but I won’t do it if it’ll throw my handling out the window comparatively.

So, what do folks think about LT vs non-LT?

I've read a handful of reviews stating that SL tread life wasn't as advertised, but there could be a lot of variables contributing to that.

I'd probably take LT/C range over SL if given the choice. Nothing wrong with SL, but it's not ideal for anything technical off road imo. That said, the SL's I have now are just fine for my needs. It really just depends on what you plan to do with your truck.

The LTs are the ideal choice in my mind IF they aren’t much of a sacrifice to on road results such as in rain and whatever else.

I’ve had the SLs for 23K miles. They are around 8/32 left. I have seen folks say theirs didn’t last very long, and I initially thought the same for mine because these start at 13/32, but the first 5 went pretty quick and they haven’t gone down at all (measurably) lately. So I’m not so sure the poor treadwear rating is true for me yet. I do find the SLs are very quiet and handle very well, which I like.

The significantly lesser quantity of sipes and the fact that they don’t go as deep on the LT tread makes me weary of buying LTs for a daily. Ideally, the LTs would be the choice because a C tire is the perfect mix of light weight, harshness, load carrying, and offroad strength. But, I do need that to have a decent tread for the road to be my choice….hence why I’m torn.

Welp I pulled the trigger. Opted for the LT255/75R17C. Came from 265/65R17 116T XL. Stock 2020 Sport wheels. 5.29 Gears and manual trans. No rubbing with the stock wheels on mud flaps. With smaller 265/70R17 tires and TRD Sema wheels, I rubbed the mud flaps on hard turns where bumps were involved. Honestly, with the sport wheels these tires aren’t even that close. I bet I could have gone up to 255/80R17 without hitting the flaps even.

Interestingly enough, despite them being black-wall LTs, they are made in Japan according to the sidewall. Even Tire-Rack said they would be USA. As, they don’t seem to have as aggressive of a sidewall as they could have, but I personally think they look great and for sure better than my XLs did.

Smooth as glass going home and I took them up to 90 briefly. Nice to see no balancing issues just like my old ones (I was concerned about LTs being a bit less smooth).

I chose these for a few reasons:
    - load C vs SL or E
    - only 49 lbs
    - 255 keeps them a bit skinnier for nice road manners
    - the additional height balances well with the 5.29 choice

I really like the highway rpm now. 2850 at 70 is smooth as can be, with plenty of power to maintain speed. Nice to be at 2850 vs 3000, and now 80 is 3250. Will report back how I like them as time goes on!

265/65R17 will be listed for sale soon, they were fantastic tires and have 25K on them
