Went bluegill fishing and the fucking trout kept darting in and taking the lures... lost a couple of good hooks to them today.

I took my daughter rockfishing /crab combo charter by the Farallones. It was her first time fishing from a boat in the Pacific and first time using a conventional reel.

She rocked it. We dropped 300ft with a 1lb. weight. That old senator 1/0 110 was my grandfathers. it is a 2.5:1 ratio which made it easier to crank.

Between the 2 of us, the captain ensured that we brought home 20 fish and 20 dungeness (limits). I cooked 2 for dinner, 1 steamed with soy sauce and ginger scallions and the other fried with sweet and sour.

Did some invasive fish removal today (120 fish caught and removed by me and some friends), this lake is so packed with yellow bass that people pull thousands out a day and the things are still over running it. We did see a couple musky on the sonar fly through the piles of yellow bass, so next time I am going with my tip up and some big suckers.

So the past several months have been stressing me out to the max on many levels, and my fishing time has been almost non existent it seems. When I do go, it’s less than ideal, but it’s some time alone. Well the past week I’ve been kid free for (thanks grandma) and ended the kid free streak pretty good this morning. The drum I’m guessing was close to 30”, super fun on light tackle in the surf. The trout was 27” and 6.8lbs (5lb is citation in nc). Just as fun as the drum, and a huge accomplishment for me as well. My largest prior was 2-2.5lbs. It was a beautiful morning with some beautiful fish and a welcomed way to start the year.

the cold snap around Christmas forced a bunch of fish through the inlets. I normally don’t beach fish this time of year, but it’s like clockwork when there’s a cold snap. Wait a few days and start working the beaches. I saw a few large trout being caught, but it was mostly drum. I didn’t expect that fish, but it’s an accidental check on the bucket list, and I’ll take it.

We have the snakehead here in the mid and northeast area. They are a populating species now. They’re not going anywhere, nature has a way of finding an equilibrium

In this lakes case, the equilibrium is giant Hmong families that come out every weekend and catch like 20 buckets of yellow bass for the family. Its great to watch as the whole family gets out there, kids running around catching fish, little dogs walking around, that one old man who sits on a bucket pulling them up non-stop with nothing but a bare hook.

Interesting, now when you say it forces the fish through the inlets, I'm guessing the cold snap causes a sharp drop in the temps of the shallow waters and the fish seek "warmer" water along the beach? I'd like to assume it would have the same effect here in FL assuming we get a big/long enough drop in temps to move the fish. I'll take anything I can learn to make my fishing more productive. I didn't get in to surf fishing till I moved to FL from VA but it's a shame because I am realizing now how much I could have done in the OBX.
