This was the temp when I got to work yesterday morning. I definitely don't get enough juice flowing to and from work, nor get the engine up to temp. Fortunately I do use the truck elsewhere and it comes up to temp at most 2-3 commutes.

You are the only person in the world that complains that their commute is too short.

Not a chance - I love it. Just need to figure out how to make my tools work for the job.

My long commute is actually good for me. I'm about 25 miles away on all back roads. When I lived closer to work, I'd go in on weekends whenever I had stuff I wanted to catch up on. I rarely do that now.

I actually like the drive in the morning. The afternoon depends on the time of year and if I have any daylight left when I walk out the door.

    what's that 30-40 minutes?

I'm good with up to 45 minutes - I used to do that too, it's not terrible. It's nice to have that separation. Hell, I go in every day even though I CAN work remote 2/5 days - just to keep that separation. But not giving up 90 minutes a day to commuting is nice. I leave work at 3:30 and I'm home at 3:35, on the bike and riding by 4 (in the summer at least....). If I make it for 7 and work lunch, I have finished a full 30 mile ride by 5 and I'm home, AFTER my ride, before I would get home with a full commute.

My neighbor does that. Leaves way before me. There have been days I get home, ride, then take the dog for a woods run/sometimes a kayak trip, get home and he's pulling up (6:30) as I'm offloading the kayak.

That commute-free life is fantastic, not gonna lie. I don't think I could go back to 45 minutes each way again. I think I need to look at lowering my max allowable to like, 20-25.

im about 24 mile commute, 35ish minutes. Not great, but just comes with the territory of living away from the city. i even commuted from western mass to Rhody for a few months. That wasnt great, just in between living situation. The morning was always fine, listen to radio news, get my coffee in me, but when you just want to get home at the end of the day, staring into the sun traveling west, you really want to put an end to that asap!

    Yup, typically 37 minutes.

I think an hour would be my limit. I have kind of a niche position so there are only so many opportunities without taking a step down.

I'm in a convenient spot for anything but work. I'm in a small town of about 1600 people. But, there's a "city" next to me (no idea how they got that status - they have fewer than 15,000 people) that has the basics. Groceries, auto parts, basic hardware store stuff, and excellent restaurants are all 10-15 minutes away. There's a small gas station just over the VT line that I can get to in about 3 minutes. If I need something like a Home Depot or BJs, that's a drive - 40+ minutes no matter which way I go.

Mayor vs Board of Selectmen I think.

I grew up mix of boonies and whatnot, nowadays I am enjoying the suburbia life not gonna lie. Especially the RI adaptation where there's no commute.

I'm going to have a 45 minute commute but my property borders bear brook state park with great hiking and mtb. I'll deal with the commute then get a job in Manchester if I get sick of the drive. I do need to get a daily tho.

(Hey as Joe has pointed out before, tell me your MPG, miles driven, and what you're looking at for a daily and I can number crunch and let you know if it's worth it!)

For me it's about the time. But, hey, if I have a 20 minute commute, come home, then a 20 minute drive to trails - that's the same as a 40 minute commute home and 0 minutes to trails!

For me its not all about the fuel savings but for fun lets do it. I get about 18 mpg, 86 mile round trip, mid 2000's tdi getting around 40-45 mpg but diesel.

I was looking pretty hard at a commuter car a couple years ago... but then I totaled the Super Duty. If I had been driving one of the 10-15 yr old Civics or accords I was looking at, I'm not sure I would have walked away from that crash. I haven't looked a commuter car since because I'd only be considering something a little bigger (more $ and less MPG to offset).

Looks like at 45 mpg and buying it for 5K I will save money in 3.5 years so it kind of makes sense fuel wise. For me its more about not wearing through the $1200 in tires in 2 years and keeping miles off the truck in general.

By commuter I dont exactly mean an econobox. I am between a VW tdi or a c5 corvette. Maybe something else we will see

My commute is 80 miles a day and anywhere between 2 and 3 hours of wasted time. Luckily I only do that two days a week now. At this point I’ll just keep adding miles to the Tacoma before it rusts away. Gas is cheaper than a new car.

C5 as a daily, that's mint. My cousin runs a mustang as his daily - his alternatives are an F150, F100 (That I don't THINK is running but it might be), and a Lamborghini.

Anyway, point is to look at the MPG AND the added costs - a second vehicle for taxes, insurance, and maintenance. I can spend all the time looking at those numbers for you, but your 3.5 year breakeven sounds about right - but probably add about a year, MAYBE 18 months, if you didn't look at taxes/insurance/maintenance too. That's about where I landed last time I did the math for someone here, it was about 4.5-5 years before you broke even, let alone saw a benefit, vs a truck.

BUT if you're looking at C5 et. al. instead, it ain't about the mileage

Well, that said with 18MPG on the truck, I think others were comparing around 14-15 with some more built up rigs, so with THAT as the starting point, you might get even longer before you break even.

Minor crash this morning. Got tagged on the side of the bed. Driveable but making a rubbing sound from left wheel. Filed my claim, called the body shop, reserved a rental. Insurance company is supposed to be sending a tow, but i've been waiting three hours.

Tomorrow the body guy will look at it and see if it's okay to drive until he can get parts and schedule me in.

DAMN. Glad you're okay - if that was by the cab could be painful.

Leave it and put a sticker on it.
