What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I decided not to relocate my fuel filter. After all said and done I figure trying to fit it on the fender was too much candy for a nickel. It seemed cramped under its own fuel lines and you have to permanently modify one of the lines coming off of it to work. Since it ain’t an item that needs changing all that frequently, I don’t think I’d mind pulling the intake off again to get to it, plus it’d give me another chance to give the intake a good cleaning if it needed it. Fuel filter is staying where it’s supposed to be. Now I just wait for LCE to send my injectors back and I’ll have this thing back on the road.

 

You should also be able to get to the fuel filter through the driver side fender. It's not super easy and definitely pretty tight, but doable that way also without having to remove the intake manifold

 

Pulled it out of the garage and cleaned up all the trim. Just waiting for the paint to cure enough to polish it. I figured the Sun hitting it would help with the curing.

Finished up my second attempt of this head gasket job this morning. Started right up with no over heating. Finally driving back to San Diego from Sac tomorrow after being a week out of work. She’s hovering around 186-196 through town. I’d like to get that down a little bit more. But overall, I’m happy it’s all done now. My nightmare is over lol.

 

This is a good question for @Speedytech7. He didn't even bother using his clutch when he drove me around in his 2.7L.

 

I took the seats out and deep cleaned the carpet and upholstery with a Bissell wet vac. I figure it's worth doing every 20 years whether it needs it or not!

Also changed out the old crusty/frayed driver seatbelt. I want to explode the old seatbelt pretensioner. Any idea how to do that without losing another finger?

 

Also added new window weatherstrips on both doors.

 

New headlights when?

 

Toyota transmissions float pretty easy and the heavy flywheel works well for it in either direction. I always liked shifting the 3RZ at higher RPM, but around town 2500-3500 depending on urgency, in AZ I felt I had to be a lot more urgent than in WA.

What did you use to clean it? It's crazy how oily and gunky the 3rz's get. My 5vz really doesn't look bad at all in comparison. I was going to add a catch can but it seems unnecessary based on what I found and the mileage I am at.

 

New headlights, grill, and rear bumper will be in the next month.

 

Now I’m gonna have to decide if I want to keep it era complete and get polished aluminum rims or go with black. I think I’ll put my black rims and tires from my ‘10 to see how it looks with them.

 

I had a bad u-joint, so I decided to change it out. Problem is there's not enough room to fit both c-clips on the caps on the slip yoke side, the other side is fine. Has any else encounter this, it seems like it's bent somehow. I've looked at rock auto and a couple other sites to find a new one ,but none of them look the same. Would you guys feel comfortable taking a file to one side just enough to get the clip to fit. Or should I try harder to find a new one. I'm in BFE Indiana and I can't find a Tacoma in any scrap yard around.

 

Something in a black jug called formula 8& or something. It was probably no stronger than soap and water. Poured it over everything and scrubbed out with a long brush made for dryer ducts. Used steel brush for getting all the little bits off as far as I could reach. Finished up with a few cans of carb cleaner for the last bit of residue.

 

Worked on prototyping a bolt on outboard shock mount for the rear.

 

I like how you're reusing the lower mount just flipped. Smart

 

I’m planning on getting a pretacoma mount for the other side since they’re opposite.

 

Positive you don't have a rogue needle stopping the cap?
