Opinions wanted: I've decided against trying to go to 33s and will get the same 265/75r16 Cooper ST Maxx's again. I could probably run my current set another 5-10k miles, but I've got getting a new set on my mind since I know it's on the horizon. I picked up a cheap set of 2nd gen stock 16 inch rims that I'm going to have the set currently on the truck mounted onto so I can run a pair on the tent trailer and also have a pair of spares til they dry rot, I guess.

But here's where I'm actually conflicted; I'll have a pair of the old Coopers on the 2nd gen rims as spares. One of those could replace the stock spare tire that's still under the bed if I get a new set of 4 tires. BUT, I also have a 5th rim that matches my truck's rims. So, I could order a 5th new tire, put that new matching spare under the truck, and do 5-wheel rotations. Or is that more trouble than it's worth? Either way, I'm putting a matching-sized tire under the truck, but I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts. A set of 5 would obviously last longer, but I wonder if they WEAR better than a set of 4?

    Yeah.
I've never done 5-tire rotations, even though I bought 5 tires when I upgraded to the 265/75 KO2's. Heck, I don't even rotate my tires as much as I probably should, but they are wearing evenly. I just wanted my spare to be the same size. My thinking is that you won't get that much more mileage doing a 5-tire rotation, and my spare will likely still be in good shape when I need to replace 4 tires (at least good enough for temporary use). Maybe someone that has done 5-tire rotations will chime in, I just personally don't see it as worth the hassle.

Don’t forget about a 5th tire pressure sensor that you got to worry with.

    Yeah.
Totally forgot about that. That would be a big nope for me.

FWIW, I cut a sidewall back when I had a Tundra. The tires weren't super worn, but probably 1/4 to 1/3 worn. Replaced it with a new tire and was back getting another front tire within a couple of days. You might not notice it on the back, but on the front it pulled and drove like crap due to the tires being different circumferences. I'd be concerned about this behavior if doing a 5-tire rotation - it would likely force me to rotate quite often.

5 when rotated properly will wear the same as four but last significantly longer.

Not needed since your other tire will go back under the truck. It is within range of the receivers. You'll just have to manually check your air once in a blue moon.

Rotate every 5000 with your oil changes and you'll be fine. Spare tire goes to back left, back left goes to front left, front left goes to back right, back right Goes to front right, front right goes under the truck for spare.

    Easy breezy :D

I thought the stock spare comes with a Tpm sensor??

Some of those fancy “cough cough” 4 runners might have tpms for the spare but the tacomas only have the 4 on the ground. You have to relearn sensors at every rotation any way so it wouldn’t be a big deal just the added expense of another sensor.

I really thought my 2013 has a sensor in the spare, if not I’ve been riding around on low tires for a few weeks. My light came on but no tires look low, then again I probably should check on that.

You can be 10 lb low and not look like you're running low. If the light comes on, check your tires. That's what it's for.

Moving up to Petit Jean State Park for our next meet. The Museum of Automobiles has agreed to let us use the entire showground. Save the date. More to come on details and times. Our membership has doubled since last year. We needed a place where we can grow.
