But I also can't imagine wanting manual hubs for any reason

    Stop. Please.

Ever since I read about Greg doing his PreRunner conversion and going the ADD route, I am so tempted to switch over. All I would need to do it is order a set of bearings and the seals. Have the spare knuckles, ADD hubs and OEM Green CVs on hand. Would just need to pull the front diff, bolt back up the actuator and tube and reinstall. Oh and run the wiring for the rocker switch.

Must resist... I am done, don't want to rip it apart again.

I don’t mind my manual hubs. They always work, and I just lock them way early.

I’ve still yet to engage mine. If I’m not careful, going to turn into @BartMaster1234 and it’ll be xx years before I actually try 4WD

It’s not like we don’t have the weather for it right now. Every dirt lot is now a mud pit here in the Bay Area. :mudding:

You've already got your setup and I doubt you paid as much as that or even half that for it. I wouldn't trade unless you're going to start wheeling in a more "spirited" manner haha. Manual hubs are totally fine, ADD is just more stout, especially if you remove the ADD part and just run the manual hub diff tube with add spindles and CVs, that's as simple and bombproof as it gets. My point is I just wouldn't ever pay more for manual hubs over ADD, its kinda like paying more for a small beer rather than less for a pitcher.

Do you leave your baking projects on the shelf like you do your welding projects?

100%. For me I look at what he did as pretty unique. Seems most everyone does go the manual hub route simply because they perceive it to be easier. All I heard when I was deciding on converting the PreRunner was "go jshift and manual hubs because you don't want to run vacuum lines, you'll need a 4WD ECU". If it really is as simple as wiring up a switch to trip the accuator, I think more would opt to go ADD when doing their conversion. Parts sure would be easier to track down.

The vacuum ADD is super simple too honestly, I don't have a 4WD computer on mine. It's just a relay that turns on an off a vacuum solenoid haha. On equals engine vacuum routed to vacuum ADD diaphragm and you get 4WD, off equals vent vacuum diaphragm to air and no 4WD. Toyota even just lables the "4WD computer" as Transmission Relay
