    Really?

Northeast of Bellingham on the Nooksack. Cross the border at Lynden or Sumas? We are south of Sumas. We actually live nearly on the way to Mt Baker, at the foot of Sumas Mountain.

Got a quote for some heavy brush clearing today. I need to stake it out and get an actual acreage but I would guess it’s around an acre total. It’s after a big steep hill and it’s a gradual hill. Said it would take him “a really long day” or two shorter days I suspect. Would use the Fecon forestry mulched. 3500 was the quote. I’ll have a few more come look and go from there. Bit higher than I hoped but I know he would use the right machine and I suspect do a really good job. Anybody have any brush clearing or forestry mulching done?

Yup that’s the setup right there! Looks like an awesome job honestly. Any idea what you paid for the job? Acreage and cost? Florida is probably cheaper than New England but still.

To me $3500 sounds kinda steep for a single acre, but maybe I’m not clear on what you’re getting done. Is there road access to the property? Is it mostly grass and bushes, or are there trees to be cleared as well, also are you getting any wood mulched or hauled off?

I think the middle quote is usually the best bet for quality work at a fair price.

$200 an hour for that machine isn't bad considering he's got about $80K sitting there, fuel, maintenance, wear and tear, labor, etc. Not including truck and trailer.

Yeah I have two more quotes coming hopefully. This was the first one.

Man 200 bucks an hour doesn’t seem bad at all. If my guy is saying it will take “one long day” I’m gonna say that’s roughly 8-10 hours so he’s 350+ an hour. My area is hilly and thick brush so I bet it’s a bit longer to do time wise.

Oh I priced out the machines to rent or buy. The FECON forestry mulched alone is over 100k. That’s before you include the forestry grade high flow skid steer. It’s an absurdly expensive setup.

Hard to really get good photos of it. Long story short it’s a new property to us. Backyard has septic redone and has a steep hill in the back. At the bottom it slopes off but still hilly. Very very thick brush and small trees throughout the area. We want it all cleared to the ground. He will work around any bigger trees and I will come through after and drop the big trees. We want the view opened up of course. I’ll try to include some photos.

Brush clearing is a bit different because of the expense the machine has. Upkeep is pricy as well given the nature of the work. Really curious to see what the other two quotes this week will be

Not sure why but you saying $80k made me think of this...

I rented a scissor lift from my car dealer and it was throwing an error code due to cold weather (single digits to negatives). The tech was dealing with a basically brand new Cat skid steer. Something funky happened and the hydraulic system was broke. Bit of ice in the filer housing but the filter itself was covered in what felt like frozen wax. Weirdest thing. The fluid was funky too. Luckily the farmer had a heated shop so they thawed it and flushed it a few times and seems to be working.

    But it's a 90k machine lol

How far we have fallen as a society.
I remember when tradesman valued their reputation, in a small town nobody wanted to be know as unreliable. :(
