I am looking for an Apple CarPlay compatible receiver for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma Standard Cab that RETAINS USE of the factory USB (so when I plug into factory USB CarPlay will pop up on the radio) and Factory Bluetooth microphone for phone calls. It’s not clear to me which ones do this I do not have steering wheel controls or a backup camera. I’m not terribly skilled at assembling harnesses and wiring and was hoping to get a “ready harness” setup from Crutchfield., but I thought I’d check here first to see if anyone has found a HU that they have set up in this way. I’d prefer not to have to install a new USB or Microphone.

I'm sure plenty of people here can chime in with their experience, but I would reach out to Crutchfield. Their customer service is legendary, and get find you exactly what you need.

As mentioned, hit up Crutchfield and enter in the search features you’d like, ie. wireless CarPlay, time alignment etc. Then add the below adapter to keep factory USB.
    https://www.crutchfield.ca/S-DpGkU2...1P1cvbSICPKxL7RAIXEtBRk3uFOZGzoAaAkT-EALw_wcB

You mentioned not being skilled at wiring harnesses. Crutchfield has a service where they will put together the harness for you, making it plug and play.

As for the mic for calls, it’s easier to route the mic that comes with the headunit up to the headliner yourself than adapt the factory one. Cheaper too.

I upgraded our 2003 Tacoma to a Kenwood unit with wireless CarPlay and if there's one thing I miss, it's the turn knob for the volume. I really dislike pressing up and down buttons to control the volume. Higher end units seem have a knob, but not lower priced models. But yes, Crutchfield.

I'd recommend one of the Kenwood DDX or DNX head units for what you're looking for. Given you don't have steering wheel controls, I'm not sure you'll need to purchase a Maestro unit? And you'll need to run a new mic due to the design of the Toyota mic system, but in all honesty, it's not a big deal.

Here's my setup - Kenwood DNX996XR w/ a Morel MPS 4.400 powering a set of Morel Tempos front & back. The head unit has Garmin GPS & Apple Carplay, so it works great for what I need it to do.

It was a bitch to get the wiring harness and other cords installed behind the head unit (not much room back there) but in the end I was able to get everything to fit. Going with the Crutchfield custom harness will likely help you a ton in this area.

I did Crutchfield DMX Kenwood's in my 2014 Tacoma and 2012 RAV4... all controls and input remained the same. Good price, great service.

The DDX DNX above looks really good. Running a mic is stupid easy.

How long did it take for them to ship? I paid for it last Thursday and still haven't seen any updates. I emailed them this morning and haven't heard back yet.

Hard to remember. It was over a year ago, but I'd say within a week or so.

Carol of the Bells is stuck in my head. Reminds me of going to church in European cathedrals.

Should I feel guilty for something?

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but I got a joying android 10.0 9” head unit from Amazon a couple weeks ago. Not going with an established brand like kenwood like other headunit a I’ve had made me a little nervous but it’s been great.

It has wireless apple CarPlay that boots up straight way, music starts within 10 seconds of turning the key. Has wired CarPlay as well that I bet you could hook to the factory port.
It came with a plug and play wiring harness, mic, gps antenna, and some other extras. Steering wheel controls work and can be programmed to do just about anything. Works flawlessly with the jbl optioned speakers and sub in by 2006 double cab trd sport. The touchscreen works better than any kenwood or other name brand head unit I’ve ever used before.

My only complaints is I need to add some shims or double sided tape to the clips in the bezel or it pops out at the bottom about 1/4” sometimes but that’s a very minor and solvable issue. Install was super easy and took less than an hour including running gps and mic up a pillars to overhead center console.

Good morning all. New here...just picked up a 2011 extra cab for my oldest and had a similar question. Recommendations on head units with CarPlay. Can you get one that will move the backup camera from the mirror to the unit? Also, how difficult is installation? I have installed a few in the past but its been 25ish years.
