Not a body guy but I'm pretty sure they can't weld the structural support directly to the panel because the weld points would show on the surface. Hence the glue

My 22 year old Land Cruiser doesn't have this either. You get what you pay for. Tacoma is a low cost truck at the end of the day, a really really good one. Take the good with the bad.

    thread title made me laugh

yes, they are made of bubble gum, and other bobs and bits.

I rebuilt my tailgate to outlast the next apocalypse, and is capable of interstellar travel, and other amusing possibilities

    Thanks!
Honestly, I'm shocked at how many issues Tacoma has.
    ***
I had a Ranger before which was over 20 years old, and I NEVER heard of such things like frame rust, unglued hood, overheating, head gaskets...
    ***
Look at this thread: Hood Vibrating, 56 pages, and it's only hood glue !

I take it you haven't priced midsized trucks recently.

It's 17 years old. It's gonna wear out eventually. Just stop by 7/11 on your way home and grab some Dubble Bubble; that should last another 17 years. Bazooka and Big League Chew work well too. Just don't use Fruit Stripe.

Seriously though, this is a normal manufacturing process these days. As @YotaProject previously stated, some automotive seam sealer is an easy and inexpensive fix.

I have several F100, F250 and GMs from the late 60s and early 70s I'll let go for NADA mid book if you don't like this bonding method and are looking to go old school.

I guess everyone’s definition of “high dollar” is different.

The problem is, there’s a big misconception when it comes to Toyota.
They are not perfect, they don’t last forever, and they do break.
The difference is, it doesn’t usually break as soon as others.
And they tolerate neglected maintenance better.

I bought a Tacoma because I didn’t want to work on my vehicle.
I will work on it, but I don’t want to.
I’d just rather work on it later, than sooner.

You never know, someone that doesn’t know any better might just come by and offer me a “high dollar” price for my truck. And I’ll be honest and tell them, “they all break eventually”. Mine has, and it will again.

    In some areas, yes.
    Other areas, No

Over all, I would say the quality is better.
    But that’s opinion.
