My son has a 2015 Tacoma 4WD; we replaced everything brake wise, as the brakes were seizing up.

It has been three months, working fine, and now the front brakes are seizing so bad that they start smoking. It happens randomly. The front end starts shaking, then the brakes totally seize. It's dangerous.

If we pull the 50 amp red fuse, put it back in and let it sit, they work fine after.

Has this happened to anyone before? Any ideas? We are at the end of our rope. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on this.

Sounds like something is flaky with the ABS system. I'd suggest to take it to a Certified Brake Shop.

Describe the symptoms, what you have replaced. Let them diagnose, quote the repair. Then decide the action you want to take.

Brakes are nothing to screw around with, especially when it comes to diagnosis and repair.

    Good Luck.

I would go to the Toyota dealer. They should have all the tools to figure out what is wrong.

Take it to the dealer and let them check it out. That sounds pretty serious, I wouldn't try to mess around trying to troubleshoot it with the potential for an accident to happen.

Did you replace the brake hoses? If not, start there.

I thought of that, but the brake should not release when the 50A fuse is pulled if it were the brake lines.

The 50A ABS fuse goes to the Skid Control ECU.

Something odd going on here for sure.

Took it to Toyota dealer, of course they wanted to redo everything. The did get codes for the MC assembly, but that does not guarantee that's it. We got quite a few codes when my mechanic friend scanned it, but the brakes seized on the way to the dealer, so I had to pull the fuse, and that resets the codes. C1253, C146E, C1422 and C 1452 is what we got. Tested the speed sensors, and they are all good.

Looking for a rebuilt assembly, as the cheapest one I could fine online was $1780. Does anyone know who might sell rebuilt Brake Booster w/Master Cylinder? This model has the "all in one" unit, so have to replace the whole thing. Problem is, if this doesn't correct it, then what?

Drove it home from dealer, and it did not seize up. No rhime or reason when it does. This is my son's truck and he doesn't have a ton on money.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
first for me, didn't know they made an all in one unit but dang they do. Dealer is anywhere from $1900 to $3200. @#$% that.
    Good Luck. Happy New Year.

I had an older 4Runner that would lock up the brakes and they would not release until it sat for a while. It turned out to be the master cylinder going bad. I bought a rebuild kit for it and everything worked fine after rebuilding it. I've never looked at the newer Tacoma master/booster so that sucks if it's an expensive single unit. You might want to check craigslist or facebook marketplace for people parting out a truck and see if you can get one cheap.

Two summers ago I had a catastrophic failure of the brake system due to a short within the firewall mounted brake unit electronics. The unit could not be repaired and a new replacement which included the brake booster, master cylinder, and electronic head was almost $3,000. I got a used (not rebuilt) one from a junk yard for $ 250. As the failure is very rare, parts are cheap as there is little demand. I think you could get the whole unit as I did from a junker (mine is an '11 and the used part was from the same year). It has worked without issue for the past 20 months since installation.

This is some great advice. You can goto car-part.com then search by zip code to find close tacomas to pilferage. Good luck keep us posted as this problem seems odd/rare.

A weird question, but have you ever had the oil changed at one of those quick change places? The reason I ask is because way back when before I did my own oil changes one of those places screwed up the brakes on my wife's car by adding the wrong shit to the brake fluid reservoir which caused the brakes to lock up.

I believe these were my third set. stock set I got 105k on. Not sure if I replaced the calipers then. Second set I got ~70k on before calipers seized. And this set only 30k. Does sit outside. Is my daily driver. I do have a Jetta TDI that I alternate with but it’s been in the shop for a few months unfortunately.

I once had a Jetta TDI I replaced the rear brakes on and had something similar happen to me. For whatever reason, the left rear caliper would drag heavily and lock up at times. I replaced the caliper and the same thing, it would either drag or lock up at times. I replaced the master cylinder and power booster as a unit and all was fine.
