Western PA, more than likely old pine used in those old houses. They used a dark "stain" to give it a more expensive look.

Let's all take a second and stare in disgust

Removed the old phone and mount in the kitchen. Glad I can't smell much now, but I shall declare this the remnants of Winston 100's

So I went down the rabbit hole of cleaning some of the walls as curiosity got the best of me. My room was the same one as the little old lady was in, so naturally it was smoked in. Loaded some liquid TSP in a spray bottle and went for it!

Just my opinion, I would replace it all with new stain grade stuff.

If it was custom fluting/trim I would look into refinishing. But from those pics it doesn't look like anything crazy unique.

Good evening peeps. All of the smoking damage has made my stomach churn, it reminded me of what I went through to clean up and seal in all of that stench in every bed room. Double coats of Kilz followed by PVA primer.

Ironically my house doesn't really smell like it, it's the damnest thing. It smelled a little odd when I first looked at it, but nothing like old chain smoker.

@Delta09 - I spied an Eastwood MIG in one of your pics, how do you like that? I was looking at one recently but didn't pull the trigger. My cheapskate brain keeps thinking that one day a like new Miller 180 will show up on Marketplace that is 10 miles away from my house and only $300.... o_O

For the little I've used it, it seems to be a badass little machine. The adjustments are really nice. I've used it on sheet metal so far, but wouldn't be afraid to use it on thicker (and within reason) stuff. I have about $800 in the whole thing with cart and 80cf bottle. That was a year ago and the welder was on sale, so add about $150-$200 for current times.
