I've got ideas for days!

 

Same... just not enough time. I just need to quit work and just chill and design and invent stuff and test.. etc.. that's totally doable right? caution to the wind and go for it? lol

but for real.. that's the dream.. one day.. one day.

 

Have a dometic PLB and considering another for the bed vs wiring, solar controller, etc. Thinking just easier to buy an all in one that I could use for other things as needed with the various outlets over the basic PLB. Set in the back, run a line for charging and or a plug in for solar I have and plug to it from lights, fridge etc.


Anybody doing something similar? Will be looking through the thread at what folks have done but any information is good.

I’ve been using portables but have come across a few issues.
- A major one currently is that with how cold it is I can’t charge them safely without risking damage to the battery cells when it’s below freezing. Most portable power stations don’t have a low temp cut off.

- I power Multiple things in the camper that require a 12v socket. Most portable power stations only have one socket. I now use a bluesea 12v fuse panel to distribute power to multiple items powered by the one 12v socket.

- The 12v socket on my portable don’t really hold a great connection. It’s very easy for it to be disconnected.

I’m now working on set up with a dedicated 100ah lifepo4 battery with Redarc bcdc charger that will live in my truck and hopefully I won’t have to think about charging it, the temperature (low temp cut off by Redarc) etc.

 

currently my portable battery lives in the top Milwaukee crate and plugs into the fuse panel hidden behind the molle panel

 

I have debated getting an all in one solar generator. Very easy to buy complete vs building your own out of separate components. Very portable so you can move it outside the camper to use for tools, camp lighting, charging laptops in use, etc. Easy to unplug and take into the garage to charge during cold weather. Prices seem to be coming down and lots more sizes and brand options. Very compact.
The only real disadvantage is if one component fails the whole unit is down and you have to ship it to the factory for repair. Who knows how long that will take.
If you build your own out of separate components, you learn more about how it works. You design it the way you plan to use it, ie, battery in a portable box (to move around); separate solar controller; separate alternator charge controller; all the 12v, USB, Anderson, etc. plugs you want; fuse block; inverter sized to meet your needs; cold temp shut-off; and on and on.
Disadvantages: probably costs more. Takes more time to plan, gather components, build. May be harder to diagnose failure (or not since you will learn a lot building it). Takes up more precious space.

How long does the tent take to dry after heavy rain? One concern for me is mold.

 

the tent is made of sail material, so it's super resistant to mold/mildew (sails often get put away wet). Generally if you can get it open to dry at some point within a few days it should be too big of a concern.

 

Not very long. A bit of sun and some breeze and it's pretty quick. I just pop the camper whenever I park for a little while and open the side doors to let some air in. If there is any condensation inside over night I wipe the inside down before closing it up which helps dry it out later.

 

After a year of pretty heavy use I pulled everything out of the back and gave it a good cleaning. There was some dust, but not bad considering the amount of time I spent driving silty dusty roads this summer and fall. Most dirt was on the side I store the MTB on and in the corners near the tailgate. Closer inspection showed a gap on each side of the tailgate I hadn't noticed before so I added some more bulb seal there. Might need to re-do the seal around the bottom of the tailgate too.

Also strapped my fake maxtrax up on the side door. It'll be more useful there than sitting in the garage where I always forget it : )


Forgot I'd put double sided VHB tape under these boards to keep them in place. Had to pry them up with a hammer.




Ready for another year. Guess this will be an annual cleaning

 

Those trax must be pretty short. I'll have to see if mine fit. You have a long bed maybe?

 

Yup, long bed. The trax are 42" long

 

In UT, once it stops raining, by the time you close it, it's dry and we're hoping and praying again.
In PA, by the time you close it an oak tree has colonized your tent material and is setting up a moss shop.

Wipe it down with a rag and air out when you get to your dry garage/sunny spot.

 

Has anyone tried to insure their SP? Were you able to add it to the truck's insurance or would it be covered by homeowner/rental insurance?

I called my company and they were a little stumped when I asked the question, so curious if anyone else has tried. They said they would look into it and get back to me.

I want to avoid being in an accident where the X1 is damaged or totaled and suddenly I'm SOL. Thanks!

Definitely would confirm with your insurer and I don’t have an SP yet, but previously confirming aftermarket parts in general with my truck, the reply has been ‘as long as it’s permanently installed, its covered’.

 

It's been mostly raining for about three weeks in the PDX-ish area...

 

Hi, I added camper/rv insurance upto $15000 - homeowners won't cover everything I haul.

 

They're not sure this counts as permanently installed... And even if they did count it as that, the amount limit is only $5k, so it won't be enough.

Thanks for they idea. I'm going to call them again tomorrow and see if this is something they can do.

 

I added mine with AAA. Had to take photos and send to my agent. The renewal papers I just received don't show anything for a camper, though I'm not sure they are supposed to. So I'll be confirming that. Was planning to shop around this year with an independent agent so I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of explaining...
