I've lived in my native state California for 57 years and I've never heard it called the freedom state.

Your factory LSD must have been worn out as my factory LSD works better than any LSD I've ever owned and I've owned many. The instant the right rear slips the left rear kicks in immediately.

Unless you install a supercharger and aftermarket tune I don't think you'll ever be happy with your trucks performance.

Pedal commander helped my truck feel much peppier.

Total waste of money! It’s only good for those who can’t modulate the gas pedal with their right foot

I thought about it but a tune will do what the pedal commander does that plus add some HP

I regeared my 4.0 to 4.10 (minimal change I know) a year ago and I felt a big difference. But I don't carry much weight and run 255/80/17 tires that are only 50lbs. I wanted 4.30 but it was backordered for a long time. changed gears because I really wanted the Detroit Truetrac and boy do I love. It. Almost 90 miles of dirt and not a single slip (2wd). Also notice a huge improvement in rain over my trd sport stock LSD. maybe it was worn out.

Maybe shed some weight or wait until the break in period is over to really judge it.

I'm waiting for the break-in to judge, almost past 300 miles now. The rain yesterday the truetrac was pretty awesome.

That is definitely true. If I had the time to install a tuner and get the maps set up, I’d definitely go that route.

Oh, I'm hiring someone to do it, I'll put on suspension and do brakes etc, but not gonna risk smoking my engine by doing wrong AF or something.

It definitely takes a lot of time and patience. I used a Megasquirt on a couple of first gen forced induction trucks in the past. Was a lot of work.
Seems like there are quite a few ways nowadays to remote tune as well. especially with HP tuners.

@YotaFAB I'm not in California, but the "simplest" solution seems to be my (unfinished) setup - just get a spare ECU that has the original Toyota programming on it and swap to that before SMOG.

I have two ECUs, both currently have the Toyota TRD Tune for the supercharger, but I will use the "spare" (second) as the one I load tunes on for off-road with HP Tuners. For trips, I will have the spare ECU with original TRD Tune with me in case I get bad fuel OR sell the truck to someone in California as it will remain CARB legal.

The spare ECU only cost me about $75 - that includes buying it, shipping once to someone to verify the TRD Tune was on there AND reprogram my VIN to it, and then ship to me.

That’s a great idea about the spare ECU but you should mention that you do need to perform the immobilizer “handshake” when you switch them. That’s probably still easier and faster than reloading the stock tune.

Question: what do you do in CA if you buy the Maggy supercharger? I know it’s CARB legal, but to pass smog you’d have to run their tune, which reportedly is total garbage and nobody wants it. Can you still swap in a spare stock ECU and just unhook the supercharger belt for the smog check?

4.88s on 33s is over-geared. Over-gearing actually makes your truck less peppy, not more, that is gearing for slow speed crawling on 33s. You did a 30% gear change for a 10% tire change. 4.10 would match the stock ratio after the tire change. 4.56 would give a little extra torque at the wheel for the heavier tires. 4.88 is a lot of extra torque at the wheel with a loss in acceleration speed. Running 285s in the lighter 17" C-load K02s would also save over 8lbs or rotational mass per tire which also helps with acceleration.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude. If you can dial in a Megasquirt, then you of all people should know that the Pedal Commander can’t really do anything that you can’t also do with your right foot.

So that's why my 4.10s feels so dang good with my 255s on the 4.0L. Before this all I've known is stock gears with 265/70/17s.

Yeah if you are running 255/75r17s then you have about a 6% tire change with 10% gear change and likely a reasonably light tire. So you have just a few points more in gearing than lost in tire without it being excessive which is a good balance for economy and acceleration.
