quick oil filter question for 4.0L

every 3 grand or 3 months new filter and oil. My friend only adds oil and changes filter every 3 grand, never changes his oil! I will never buy a car from him.

 

Nice design but $200!!!!
I don't mind spending money on my truck but that's a bit over the top for a filter.
I'll stick with Amsoil EA or a Napa Gold(Wix)filter.

 

This is a very bad idea IMO. you would want to do it the other way around, change the filter every 5k and dump the oil at 10k. Once the filter is "full" it bypasses it all together. Not a good thing IMO.

Those filter look like a neat idea. A little pricey for my application. However if I had a race engine worth big bucks I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

 

Me too. If I had the money to buy a race engine I would have the money to buy that filter.

Why would you change the oil, but not the filter? You're just asking for trouble if you don't change the filter with the oil... if that's what you're asking.

 

^Plenty of folks who do extended drain intervals do that. They do an oil study every 5K miles and if they oil is fine, just swap the filter. Bobistheoilguy.com is filled with people who do this.

I went by the dealer today to buy some filters. I took the YZZD1 code and asked if it works on the 05 V6.

I bought a case (10)

90915-YZZD3 Toyota Filters. List is $5.41 for 1 filter. You get a better deal when you buy more at a time. I got these for $43 ($4.30 each).

 

You wouldn't happen to have a part number handy for these filters? Would it be the same as the Sequoia V8?

 

if you shop around, you can find em for $125.

 

i think 30 microns is what they claim. i've read K&N goes down to 10. dunno about the factory filters. i think the magnet is a major draw for me after seeing what my drainplugs looked like when i did the 30k fluid change. so i wonder if their higher flow rate claim is true or not?
i figured the cleaning would be easy with some good solvent based brake cleaner.

i just thought of something...we should probably be more focused on the fuel we use, and the AIR filter...these are the only two ways for dirt to get in, correct? passing through the air filter or from deposits the fuel leaves behind. rather than worry about which filters the oil the best, try to prevent dirt from being in the oil in the first place.

am i onto something....?

 

^^Bingo I agree 100%. If you change your oil and filter regular, you won't have any problem even if you run the cheapest filter you can find. I personally don't like the idea of a magnet in my oil filter for the reason that there is a lot of fluid going through a relatively small area, good change that any metal on the magnet won't stay there long?

 

And the OEM one costs $5.41, where Mobil 1 wants $12 bucks. And if you buy in bulk the dealer gives a discount.
