The automatic transmission models with the hydraulic booster still have hill start assist, so it's not a hardware limitation. I'm assuming it is to allow you to roll/rock back and forth while off-roading using the clutch while in gear.

Not how HA on 3rd gens works at all. The moment you start moving, brakes are released. It’s not intrusive whatsoever.

I can roll/rock back and forth while off-road on my sport with HA no problem.

That’s why I don’t understand why so many folks don’t like it. It’s not intrusive at all.

Admittedly, I don't have the requisite experience to know how well it works in practice, but I suspect that was the reason that Toyota did not include it in the OR/Pro.

I'll drive a MT for as long as I can. I hate it when an AT is hunting for gears going up a grade. I love being able to downshift to pass on the highway, and climbing hills. They're fun to drive, and a natural anti-theft device. I even get better mileage than my buddy in his 2019 OR DCLB, with my RTT on my truck. The last car I had an AT in ('86 4Runner turbo, only came with ATs in North America), I swapped over to a 5 speed once the torque converter died. Even my commuter was a Honda Fit with a 6 speed MT, super fun to drive for a dinky little car.

Ah, the Fit. I had an older 5speed stick. The little engine was born to sing as a soprano, and with the MT the rev’s could soar. Fun little car.

They are great, simple, cheap cars. Fun to drive, better than 30 MPG even at 80+ on the freeway.

AT’s will keep improving until whatever comes along to make them obsolete. In certain situations MT’s are predictably better but depend on a human element that is even more predictably unreliable. Speaking as one of those human elements I enjoy occupying the position of control between the engine and transmission even with my occasional shortcomings. It keeps me engaged in the process and I know exactly what to expect and when.

Until such a time as an automatic transmission can A) see the dynamic situation on the roads and B) read the driver's mind, then automatic transmissions will always be inferior to manual transmissions.

That assumes an intellect capable of appraising that dynamic situation and sufficiently engaged to do so. Neither are consistently in play. I’m not saying AT’s are better, only that for some they are a better option.

Make all vehicles manuals = way, way fewer idiots driving. Manual choke would get rid of even more.

There is no denying some folks are incapable of the necessary consciousness to properly drive a car, regardless of automatic or manual.

I’ve had the same question about multi-terrain select. There’s no obvious technical reason to not include it with a manual transmission that I can think of. My only guess is that it is a combination of an subtle complexity in software and hardware that would have raised the costs of the manual trims combined with marketing thinking a customer buying a manual is less interested in technological advancements / Nannie’s / luxuries.

Don't the wheels occassionally stop turning when the truck is crawling? i don't have a truck with crawl control (yet), but it looks like they do on youtube.

Crawl control is quite different than multi-terrain select. CC takes control of the speed of the truck unlike MTS. I’ve never had a truck with crawl control, but I can imagine how it would not work well with a manual transmission. I’m guessing it would need a way to mechanically control the clutch. On the other hand, multi-terrain select is a simple enhancement of A-TRAC that allows its behavior to be adjusted (I think).
