Crawl control is the brake system controlling wheel spin. AWD is torque transfer in the axle to control wheel spin. The FJ Cruisers with manual trans are AWD. The autos are 4WD. Why do you think they did it that way.

Well a clutch replacement is a good bit less than a automatic overhaul. I tow a 18' camper try that with an automatic you'll end up with a stiff neck at the end of the day with all the automatic shifting, it's bad enough with out towing some thing.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I have one and found them more fun than even more expensive cars that are faster on paper. I am glad I picked one up when they were cheaper.

They have the best feeling gearbox I've ever felt.

You didn't know they made a different drivetrain for the manual or automatic in the same vehicle?

While I agree the S2000 has one of the absolute best gearbox feels of any car out there, it ranks second on my list, right behind the 1st Gen RX7 a former girlfriend of mine had.

Dumb question perhaps, but why would an automatic have a brake-system based hill-assist? Doesn’t the vehicle just stay in “drive” while idling, and the clutch/torque converter in the transmission keep it from rolling back?

    No.

In fact the system will shutdown if you roll back abruptly while adding throttle input. This is seen often in 4lo crawling situations where the brake assist is disabled, when climbing a ledge and rolling back while applying throttle. The engine will shutdown as if tue engine stalled.

The torque converter is the only link between the engine and transmission and depending on weight of the vehicle and grade of hill, it may not have enough torque transfer to hold the vehicle in place. For example, my 24" RV with a 460 and C6 transmission and tipping the scales at 11,000lbs will roll back in gear on moderate grades. A hillholder would be nice on it, but not something I will play with.

    They didn’t

The FJ is a three wheel drive, with rear diff locked, front diff is still “open”

My manual trans got me out letting my wife's friend use my truck to schlep wooden pallets.

"Hey can I borrow your truck Saturday??"

    "Can you drive a stick?"

    "No."

    "Oh well!"

That plan doesn't work for me; folks in my circle want to borrow my Tacoma explicitly because it does have a manual transmission.

I actually like all the Tech. advances but I feel I have more control with my MT in challenging terrain. Especially with how low the MT is geared and with clutch start cancel it just works for me.
I have driven the AT multiple times before I bought mine and it's also very capable but inferior in certain recovery situations especially sand IMHO.
