    Buy it!
I was hesitant due to the price. Reading the threads about tailgate theft replacement it didn't seem so bad.
It's very well made, well engineered, fit great...
I was installing the OEM tailgate lock and had the whole inside tailgate panel off. So, no issues installing it.
    Owner was responsive to questions.

The metal bolt on version looked to offer the same amount of security for about 1/2 the price.
After reading about the difficulty some have had removing the factory screw I went with the keyed drop in.
Figured I'd have that problem. Decided not too risk it.

Is it their "V2.2"? I've been meaning to grab one.
Like you i intend to do this when I install the remote tailgate lock, but I'm wondering if having both are overkill?

You can't steal the tailgate if it's locked so for me, having a remote tailgate lock is enough security. My vote is overkill.

Some industries rely on multiple layers of protection for safety. I worked in one such industry for 20 years. A worker could be fired if he didn't comply with even one of the many layers of protection designed to keep his co-workers safe. I have an SR that does not have a remote lock on its tail gate, only a key lock. I look at the Sabellco lock in addition to my tail gate key lock as an example of two layers of protection. It's only necessary if I forget to key lock my tail gate. So I rely on the Sabellco lock as my back up layer of protection if I forget to key lock my tail gate. For those of you with remote tail gate locks I would think the Sabellco lock would indeed be overkill, but for me with my key locking tail gate it gives me a little of peace of mind. At my age, my mind needs all the help it can get.

Looks like I got version 3.0.
A screwdriver jammed in the key lock could quickly overcome a locked tailgate imo.
Still seems like a small price to pay to make mine less likely to disappear.

Glad you have that much faith in the factory key lock on the tailgate handle. Have you ever taken the panel off the tailgate?
If so, it should be somewhat obvious how easy it would be to overcome.
I have no skin in the game.
So, I don't care if anyone buys any form of tailgate theft protection.
Wanted to let people know the Sabellco was the real deal, well made and worth the money.
I have no experience with the other type. Looks like it would be effective and make the tailgate much more difficult to steal.

Did you leave the star washer off the pivot point on purpose?
I press them in place with the open end of the 10mm nutdriver.

    @DVR

I took that pic before I put the washer on the pivot point...it's on there!

Was about to order the Sabellco lock when I noticed this statement in one of the reviews:

"If you buy this lock, I personally recommend not putting washers on the cable bolt because then a thief might cut the cable and then fail to take the tailgate because of the lock. Now you have a cut cable to replace."

Can any of the experts here share some additional insight on both recommendations before I install it?

    TIA!

    Not an expert but-
They are just suggesting that the cable may be cut and tailgate left hanging.
So, leave the tailgate cables as is so they don't get cut. That way you can put things back together w/o buying new cables in the event the device foils a thief.

Statement about the star washer was in reference to the toyota tailgate lock actuator where it attaches to tailgate latch/handle (inside tailgate panel). Not the sabellco locking device.

A ruined lock does NOT destroy the tailgate. It is a separate and removable component of the tailgate.

It won't even damage the tailgate itself. Only damages the lock - this is because the lock cylinder is not pried out, it is simple twisted hard enough to shear off the wee tumblers inside. No surrounding sheetmetal damage.
A lock tumbler is easy to replace and very inexpensive.
The factory lock can also be overcome/defeated by removing a couple of screws on the back panel of the tailgate and reaching inside. The Sabellco lock cannot be defeated so easily and still will prevent theft of the tailgate regardless of the gate being locked or not.

I've seen cab doors opened by a screwdriver in only the lock. Absolutely NO damage to the door skin. Owner didn't even know how he was broken into until the cop showed him the trashed lock tumbler. (Guy from work. Word was sent out to all of us about the break-in due to him losing company property.)
