I am preparing to eventually replace my spark plug tube gaskets and head cover gasket in order to fix the leaky gasket on cylinder 3. I have a couple questions:

    - are there torque specs for the 10 bolts and plate washers for the head cover? I can’t find them in the repair manual.
    - do I need new bolts and washers for the head cover since they are crush washers or can they be reused?
-is there a gasket kit from Toyota? Or source these individually? Confirming part numbers below:

You can get a felpro valve cover gasket kit that comes with new sealing washers and valve cover gasket. I got mine from orielly's. Then all you need are the spark plug tube gaskets.
Not sure what the torque spec is on those. I just did it until I felt it was tight enough. And then if it leaked at all, tighten it some more until it stops. Tricky with those rubber sealing washers. They have a bunch of squish.

Valve cover bolts are torqued to 53 inch pounds. I would get new washers since they seem to be some sort of rubber compound.

I don't think there's a Toyota kit with just those parts. This one claims to be "OEM Japanese" parts. That might mean they're Denso-branded (or whoever makes the seals for Toyota) rather than Toyota-branded, but they're probably good either way. Unfortunately, they're out of stock at the moment: https://209yota1.com/products/valve-cover-gasket-set-2rz-3rz-1995-2004/

If your engine is anything like mine, the rubber grommets on the valve cover bolts are in sad shape and ought to be replaced. If they're in good shape I don't think there's any issue with re-using them.

Thanks guys. I will look into this kit and the felpro. Did Toyota use rubber washers at this location originally?

@Logans2001 got it. 53 inch pounds. Where did you find that? Just for future reference.

Sucks that toyota doesn't seem to have a spec for the 2RZ/3RZ engines. 5VZ we know is 53 inch pounds but no mention of the 4cyl. I wonder why it was left out. I went back all the way to 1995 to see if there was a spec for it, nothing.

That's for the 5VZ. It oddly doesn't list it in the the 4 cylinder instructions...

That is strange. I didn’t even think to look at the 5VZFE. That is helpful!

It's less Tacoma and more mod
The valve covers make aluminium to aluminum contact when tightened at the bolt site, you can just tightened em by hand until they aren't squishing anymore and you're there. No torque spec necessary

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I'm pretty sure the gasket/washer/ and materials (what the cylinder head and valve covers are made of) are essentially the same.

I would just use the spec for the 5VZFE... Or keep it simple and do exactly what @Speedytech7 said. Just tighten it till it makes positive contact.

Zane's proceedure is actually better than torqueing it to the 53 inch pound spec. I have found when you only go to the 53 inch pounds, you always have to keep tightening them.
