Ah. Makes sense they may do it on a base model. I heavily debated just waiting for a '24 before I put the order in for a '23 but don't want to be forced into a 4cyl if I want some creature comforts.

I really doubt they will do this , I love how no one has even driven the truck and yet worried .

Do what? Put a turbo 4 cylinder in it....they have literally been saying that will be the engine for the 4th gen for over 2 years...

Toyota put out a document that layed out the line and the tacoma and 4 runner each had turbo 4 cylinders projected, and had the projected years they would be built, it was before covid and some of the targets were missed, but most of them were on time including the Tundra.

I thought I saved a screenshot of it but can't locate it at the moment, maybe someone else made a screenshot it or can share.

Any word on if the 2.4 (non hybrid) is going to come with the 10 speed Tundra trans or the Highlander/NX 8 speed? I feel like it could go either way. From a reliability standpoint, let's hope it's the 8.

Has the 10spd on the Tundra been unreliable?

Ive seen a few failures on the Tundra forums, but nothing crazy. More just unproven vs unreliable. The 8 had a rough start, but has been fine since. It's never been in a truck config though. Highlander is the closest.

I'd like to think Toyota channels their "inner Sun Tzu" by purposefully letting their competition pay the premium associated with the heavy R&D investment, learning curve and all of the fuckups/warranty issues that come with being first to market by doing something new & innovative.

Why go heavy into R&D, or risk one hell of a reputation for reliability when you can watch your competition take those same risks & get burned? Hell, Toyota can just buy one of the EcoBoost trucks after Ford has fixed it & just tear the thing apart to see exactly how Ford fixed it. Instead of dumping millions into R&D themselves, they just buy a $60k Ford truck to dissect it & learn what works or doesnt. Not a bad return on that investment of $60k haha

TL;DR - I think Toyota is purposefully conservative since their competition is very eager to take risks without achieving meaningful gains in market share. It's usually cheaper & less painful to learn from somebody else's mistakes than your own. Obviously that's a moving target year by year, but I think the point stands.

Sun Tzu's Art of War is a great book. I'm pretty sure it's mandatory reading for most Japanese executives at Toyota

I guess we should be thankful Ford exists to innovate, or our Toyotas would still have carburetors and front drums.

Let's see if we can get this thread to 100+ pages before any actual information comes out for the 2024 Taco.

When they'll announce no changes until 2025.. and the speculation party continues.
