I just upgraded and installed both my openers with a belt drive Chamberlain who makes just about every brand of opener but Genie..

The belt attaches to the other end with a long bolt looking thing with a spring on it and two nuts, one nut pulls the belt and the other locks it down. Should be able to pull that side of the belt about an inch or so with light effort, that’s the correct tension.

My experience with belts is on motorcycle timing, but your belt looks like it has a bad spot where the teeth are touching each other like they got compressed, on the left side of the pulley in your photo. Maybe that compression and bunching up is what broke the cover off. The cover looks pretty beefy.

Thanks for the information. Your right part of the belt has been compromised and when the door is 3/4 way up the belt on the pully on top of the motor starts to make a screechy sound. I saw on the web the length of the spring is 1.25" and it is. So not sure it needs to be tightened more.

I have had good luck with Genie Screw Drive openers. I recently upgraded to a newer Genie because I wanted modern remote control security instead of the old school flip a switch. The old Genie still worked great. Just have to apply grease to the screw drive every so often.

The drive cog on the door opener is either damaged or their is a foreign matter on the drive cog teeth. You can see the drive belt is displaced to the left side (this is probably what broke the drive cover)

@desmodue I agree. To run it this way will put undo stress on the drive cog and belt. I am going to have to figure out a way to loosen the belt, take off the belt, inspect the drive clog and replace the belt. I am thinking. I don't what to break the motor itself.

Your belt appears to be split. Time to replace it if it is. The cogs might be in need of replacement too...

The tension adjuster is on the trolley (the part that grabs/attaches to the arm mounted to the door) loosen the adjuster and then you can remove the belt. Door opener installation manual attached. Just do Step 5 backwards to release tension on the belt

How are the springs on your door? One could suspect that if they aren’t properly tensioned, or broken that the motor might be trying to pull up that heavy wooden door on its own and therefore stretching the belt.

Good call on checking the springs. I do most shit around the house and with cars. But when one of my springs broke I called a pro. Not something I was comfortable working on.

The spring on my door is new. Just replaced in the last couple years.
One thing I noticed is looking from the door motor to the door the belt on the right side is allot tighter then the left side (trolley) side. However I don't see any brakes in the belt.
