Serpentine Belt Roller Wobble, 56k

Funny it says Do Not apply oil or grease on the idler pulley.

I had a 2004 4Runner with 4.0L V6 developed chirping noise at 120k miles while on a trip, stopped by a random shop, the old timer dude pointed out it was from the idler pulley. He pulled the cap off my power steering reservoir, put couple drops of ATF on the pullet bearing and put it back. It didn't make any more noise for at least 80k miles when I sold it.

It's a sealed bearing, it took about 15-30 seconds for the ATF to work it in, but that's all it about.

 

Mine wobbled since the day I got it, then the bearing started going out around 70k. When it was cold and first start of the morning, it would make the patented worn bearing chatter noise. Replaced idler and belt. New idler still wobbles

I believe there’s only one bearing, which is what causes this. Save the old one, get a new bearing pressed in and have a new one on the shelf. That’s what I’m gonna do anyway.

Here is the failing bearing after I pressed it off the pulley.
There are two metal shields, two rubber shields, and a single row of balls with a plastic retainer. There is not a lot of grease and a bit of super tiny metal pieces. The bearing is notchy, dry feeling, and makes noise.

Was there a number on the bearing?

 

Tried the eBay link for the bearing but it came up not found. My SR5 is 3 months old with 3986 miles. Been to the dealer and they used the note in the manual stating that wobble is normal to say mine is normal. I asked about the squeaking/screeching at startup and because they couldn’t replicate it ( no shit dumbasses the truck is warm) they said there was no issue.

Ive been all over eBay and literally found hundreds of bearings. If you have the time can you repost which bearing you used. Thanks.

 

Why not purchase an OEM bearing?

 

You can't buy a Toyota OEM bearing, you have to buy the pulley.

If you do not know how to correctly press a cartridge bearing, you will destroy it almost instantaneously.

 

My OEM roller runout is not “normal”

 

What’s the price difference between a bearing and the pulley? I can’t imagine a pulley to be too cost prohibitive.

I just looked on my receipt. Mine was 45$ but I thought I called the local dealer and they wanted close to 80

My idler started chirping at 45k miles (yesterday) maybe a slight wobble. ive ordered a replacement for next weekend
