In the context of various types of woods, toxic generally means skin irritation, respiratory irritation and asthma, eyes and nose irritation... you get the picture.
Black Walnut, for instance, can cause dermatitis and aggravate asthma.
Note that this list is not comprehensive; Cherry, for instance, is not listed.
Also, Pine is not generally known by the public at large to be toxic, but it most definitely is (mildly).

What the list does not show is relative severity, which to a large extent depends on an individual's susceptibility.
Of the woods I've commonly used, Walnut is worse than Birch, for instance.
It takes a whole lot of exposure for me to get a reaction, whereas Mrs Gritto will get sinusitis with just a whiff of Red Cedar.

Walnut and tree nut woods can cause people with a tree nut allergy issues also, from what ive read, but cutting boards and such are very low chance of issues. the dust just makes me sneeze.

 

Good point, that hadn't occurred to me.
Yeah, we're not talking about this being a serious issue for most people.
But if someone who aspires to be a woodworker happens to be prone to dermatitis or asthma... not good.

And once an item is finished and sealed, it's basically a non-issue altogether.
