are you drunk? fuel grades are different, thats a fact. what we are talking about is if the car can recognize a different grade and drive better without a tune.

Haaa, yeah and I get more power from 93 octane because 93 is a bigger number than 87 and it is more expensive. I has to be better!

it's more resistant to detonation. as a result, more timing may be added which can result in more power output.

they used to have different HP ratings for 87 and 91 posted on Toyotas website. the HP rating for 91 was slightly higher.

Mine has run better on higher octane as well. With 87 i can feel it hesitate and an occasional misfire. 91 it has never done it. Ive switched back n forth numerous times in the past 4 years. To each there own and maybe altitude plays a role in it too.

    Post up the link.

All 3rd gen Tacos have always had the same HP and torque ratings through their whole run as far as I know. I'm down for learning something new though.

You might be thinking back to the 4.0 in the 2nd Gen, llRC it was 245HP for the first couple years on premium, then dropped to 236HP on 87 thereafter.

    A few.
That wasnt caused by the octane rating, its when they switched to the updated rating system for HP and TQ.
SAE J2723. Toyota didnt make the switch until the 2007 model year.

    I dunno about that...

"Toyota later issued a bulletin stating that while the FJ's fuel-door sticker says "Premium Unleaded Fuel Only," the owner's manual notes that premium is required only for optimum performance-and all 239 rated horses-but that the vehicle will run just fine on regular unleaded (87 octane)."

I'm assuming the Tacoma of like generation had some similar shenanigans happen to it.

I know about it because I owned a 2007 FJ that did have that premium fuel only sticker inside the gas door. I ran nothing but 87 octane in it for the 3 years I owned it and it ran great. 239HP in the FJ vs 236 in the tacoma is nothing new just like the same 3.5 engine in the current Tacoma has different HP ratings depending on what model its being used in do to differences in the exhaust sytems and other things.

I have a 2006 6 speed 4.0L and using 89, I noticed the engine runs a lot smoother, pedal response is better, (not doggin out). I have no lights on the Dash and have 218k miles... for some reason with 87 it feels like it is dragging, I put a higher octane and it runs perfectly, actually better all around. Better fuel mileage, better throttle response, better launch speeds. Can anyone explain this to me?.. do I need new fuel injectors?, (already did the plugs), do I need coils?. Would a cold air intake by k*n make a difference with performance. I'm looking for a little more pep in it's step..

From my time on m/c's, you really get a feel for what the motor is doing and my '23 definitly wants 89. At least it's not like my car that wants 93.

From what I read on google, different sources, it seems like 87, 89, 91 all have around same ethanol level 10% required by law. Only difference is how much more purified fuel is and additives that "should" keep engine clean and provide better performance.

■Non-recommendation of the use of blended gasoline ●If you use gasohol in your vehicle, be sure that it has an octane rating no lower than 87. ●Toyota does not recommend the use of gasoline containing methanol.

●Use only gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol. DO NOT use any flex-fuel or gasoline that could contain more than 15% ethanol, including from any pump labeled E30, E50, E85 (which are only some examples of fuel containing more than 15% ethanol).

Anything higher than 91 is bad for the engine because Ethanol level is above what manual states. The E85 is 99 octane rating, its very confusing because ive only seen 87, 89, 91, in short 89 seems the way to go, ill try that.

I can't find any info on shell, exxon mobil web itself about ethanol, its all google and all different sources...

The actual ethanol difference seems to be in diesel, where the octane level also cuts ethanol to less

Shell Regular Diesel and Shell V-Power Diesel both contain up to 7% FAME. Shell Regular Unleaded contains up to 10% ethanol following the governments E10 introduction in 2021, whilst Shell V-Power Unleaded contains no more than 5%. This is in accordance with current UK specification requirements.

https://support.shell.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115005935369-What-is-Ethanol#:~:text=Shell Regular Diesel and Shell, contains no more than 5%.

In case of an exxon mobil, they say their diesel contains no ethanol at all, go and figure lmao.

In the end it seems to be more affecting on diesel side, gasoline wise not that much, manual does say to try other gasoline brand if engine seems to have performance issues. I feel most power with Exxon Mobil 87, Sunoco 87 had most MPG ive had on my truck MPG 27 but definitely felt bit less power. I will start pumping 89 to see.

This is a good guy, he tests OILs, GAS, all kinds of stuff, if you like seeing stuff like that.
