Should be noted that the coolant reservoir isn't a sealed system and its easy to smell vapors from the overflow by the cap.

2018 SR5, 34000km (21000 miles). Was doing checks today and noticed both my coolant reservoir and rad were bone dry... wtf! Started looking around the engine down past the manifolds and can see some areas where there is caked on white/pink crystal residue (see example below). Looks like a coolant leak that is burning off.

Dealer will be looking at it Friday. I am guessing it is the passthrough pipe. Surprisingly no overheating or signs of stuff not working, must of been just enough left in the system that it was not showing as a problem yet. I have no idea how long I had been driving around like that. Topped the coolant off for now to hopefully last me the week.

I have a 2016 and my reservoir has been low for years. I did my oil change yesterday and this time noticed the reservoir was completely empty. I bought some Toyota coolant and topped it off. I took it for a test drive. I inspected after the drive and found this on the radiator passenger side.
    I am at 100k miles.

I owned a 1st and 2nd gen as well. Hope this is not a quality indicator for future Tacoma's.
I am going to keep looking to see if it is the part mentioned earlier in the thread.

I had this same problem as well with the coolant overflow hose dripping. I cleaned it off and added a spring clamp. All's good since.

It actually does look like it is a leak from the radiator. I can't see how it can be coming from anywhere else. Fortunately I don't need to drive anywhere this week. I am going to get a new radiator and try replacing it myself. Anyone seen radiator replacement instructions for a 2016 Taco on here?

2018 TRD OR in for an oil change @ 13K miles. When I got home and checked the oil level I noticed this significant coolant leak at the front of the engine. I am disappointed for several reasons. 1. The dealer technician who performed the service did not notice or did not mention the leak considering it's pretty obvious. 2. The leak is from a crack in the front coolant distribution manifold. The large hose on the left of the top pic is the upper radiator hose. 3. This is a part that is designed to last the life of the vehicle. My truck has 13K miles and does not tow or work hard at all. Not sure if this is a design, supplier or manufacturing failure. 4. I have seen posts about the rear coolant hose pipe leak but I'm wondering how many others have had this part fail. It goes in to the dealer on Monday but I have to admit I really lost a lot of confidence in this vehicle and Toyota in general.

I wouldn't blame the workers that assembled the truck. This is a bad design, probably to increase profits in lieu of QDR. I would think Mike Sweers is the culprit of the many issues of the 3 gen

I left the bracket on the motor and just filed the rub point down a bit for enough clearance. Only took a few minutes.

According to my mechanic I have some dried up coolant near the water pump and he said I should replace the water pump along with the coolant exchange at 90k. I currently have 80k and not sure when this started. I don’t seem to be losing coolant at the reservoir overtime. No fluid on the ground and the dried up leak appears to be small in nature at the moment. Do I really need to replace the water pump if it’s just a seep at this point? How long does a typical water pump last? Is this a known issue on the 2017 models?

Coolant bypass maybe? That's how the dealer found out mine was leaking...taking the skids off to change the oil and they saw the pink stains.

Water pumps can last a long time, at least past the warranty and far beyond, so hard for me to say. My previous 13yr old 200k miles T4R was working good as new when it was traded, so there’s that.

It is not an issue for the 3rd gen 3.5l as far as I can tell. Water pumps even when good can seep a little drop now and again, some consider this normal. I would leave it be, with an eye on it. The coolant(s) is design to self-seal very small leaks when exposed to air, so I would leave it alone for now until and if it becomes a mayor issue.

Just be sure not to overfill, check when engine is cold on level ground, take note of ambient air temperature as it may normally expand/contract day to day.

    No need to panic...Yet

I'm going to have to spend a little time looking things over, it seemed to be collecting around the oil canister and then dripping down.
