2023 SR5 Now Includes Push Button Start!

I don’t even like any car that locks, unlocks, or doesn’t let me lock without me telling it to.

 

Cars with normal keys can be stolen too; and have been for the last 100 years. And if the door sensor happens to break I'll be back to taking the fob out and hitting unlock just like you. I doubt programing will be an issue in 10 years. Cars have been using coded keys for 30 years and no issues with programing old ones.

The simple fact is people are afraid of change and make up non-sense excuses why something that is new and more convenient is somehow bad. Is it hard to take out a key or twist it to start the car? No, but why should I? This isn't really meant for you just a general rant.

 

I had a 1970 F250 high boy with separate keys for the ignition and doors (glovebox did not lock). Back then Ford had double sided keys, and I figured out that the square key blank was used up until the 80s (this was 1991) and they had a really large blank for Crown Vics or some other big car. I bought some big Curtis blanks and had a locksmith cut one side for the door and one side for the ignition. I put the door side of the key head in the bench grinder and when it was dark I could feel the rough side and know rough side up opens the doors.

I was proud of that! I made it take only one key.

And yes, no AC or PS. Roll up windows. Different times. AC and PS is a must..but a lot of things I can live without. I am happy my 6MT has a proper key and for heavens sake no start/stop.

 

Sure they can still steal a chip key car but it’s not as slick as coping to keys signal. You have to usually get around the key security or get in the car and physically connect to it to program a new key. Those things take some time. Of course everything can be broken into and stolen with time an talent.
Using a traditional key doesn’t bother me. I’m sure by the time I replace my Tacoma they will all be the proximity key or something else new. I’ll deal with it then.

 

Yesterday while looking through this thread I was curious and looked up some stats on car theft. The text below also doesn't point out that there are 50,000,000 more registered cars in the US since 1991. Car theft is always going to be a problem, but to blame smart keys is the opposite of reality.

 

Imo, leaving keys in a vehicle is equivalent to stupid is as stupid does. At any rate if a thief wants your car their going to take it.

 

If I'm going to do that I might as well use a key to start it since the point doing either is so the truck cannot see (I guess hear might be a better term since it's radio waves) the FOB's signal.

Just curious. has anyone forgot their fob was in their pocket and went swimming? did the fob still work or did you have to find more creative ways to get going?

 

If you turned FOB off, you use a key to unlock the truck but you won't be able to start the truck until you turn FOB on if you have PTS system.

 

Hold the key to the start switch and you can start tge truck without turning Smart Key back on.

I already knew this back in 2017. Plus one of my FOBs has no battery in it. I am able to start the truck with FOB without battery.

 

I am talking about if PTS is disabled, you said you’d need to re-enable it to start the truck. You don’t need to.

I said to turn FOB back on in order to start it because some people like to push it with finger without holding the FOB to switch.

Which means they get in and out of the truck all day such as construction or running errands. It will annoy after awhile.
