How's the sewing coming along? What material did you end up going with?

 

What material did you use? Also could you post some more pics, been dreaming about making my own for my best Gen 4dr

 

Sewing was my favorite nightmare. Definitely went with that same stuff you used. So grateful for you meeting up with me dude! gave me the motivation seeing your rig.

It needs a solution on the corners because the kedar rail wont go end to end on the top. It isnt the prettiest job but its whole.

I haven't decided on a final mounting method. So I've got to weld tabs to the frame and drill the bed or something. After that id be willing to open the tent on the truck.

 

Ahh I see what you mean with the corners. What does the inside kedar rail look like? Maybe others have some solutions for that. My build didnt use the kedar rails but even for me those corners were tough to get closed up. occasionally I can see some light coming though but if it rains the water runs down the metal sides.

 

I didn't use the inside corner braces on the top, so I mitered the keder rail to fit tight into the corners on both top and bottom. Seemingly hasn't affected it at all, although I DID have them installed temporarily while I fit the roof on. I used two beads of silicone between the roof and 8020, bolted the top panel in, and then removed the interior braces. The silicone acts as an adhesive and holds the 8020 square.

 

Got a good test fit the other evening. Last set of welding is for the mounts that go to the bed rails. Then drill my holes for floor and roof, then paint!

 

Has anyone thought of making the top wedge part easy removable, so you can just throw it up there for trips? Or is that more hassle than its worth?

 

Do you find the upper panel to be rigid enough without the inner brace? Interesting.

I've read some stuff about guys 3d printing kedar rail to mount over the that bracket to keep things lined up.
I think I've got another idea about fixing it but just need a little time to sew it up. A second piece of fabric is my idea.

@Rucas did you use clamps to mount or did you weld brackets?
I'm thinking I'll be welding L (type) brackets. Out of 3/16ths at 6 different points on the bed at this point in time.

 

For me it is too heavy to even consider it to take it off. Also it is a hassle to line up all the bolt holes to mount it. Unless you have a really good and easy way to securely mount the upper wedge, i would not consider it taking it off.
You need four people to be able to throw it on there.

 

The edge that mates to my bed has about a 3 inch right angle so I just drilled holes in the top of the bedrail and a hole through the aluminum and bolted it down.

I did have clamps at first but for some reason the camper seemed to shift forward. On some trails I would hear it vibrating against the cab back window frame and when I got to a camp I would loosen the clamps, try to shove it back a quarter inch and then tighten down again. I think the bolts keep it more in place to where I want it.

 

Bought my tubing this weekend, as well as alot of the hardware. Need to find a good source for the 8020, anyone in Socal have a recommendation?

I was hopping someone would have a supplier over in the LA area for you but last I saw there was another guy who ended up making the drive over to Phoenix where I got mine. Check out Heitek Automation. They're in North Phoenix. Great guys that I spoke with and were willing to ship but I did will call since I was 20 min away.
