    Sad day.

I have a 140K mile '02 Tacoma 4Wd 3.4. All stock. Mint condition. Manual Trans.

Last week, I had the oil changed and they didn't tighten the oil filter enough. My wife took it to go for a ski and she never made it. The engine is done.

The well-known company who serviced it has insurance and is cooperating. The truck is at my local Toyota dealer, who see lots of trucks, lots of volume/experience... Durango, Co. So far, they have sourced a 126K engine replacement but I want better. I want a new one. Can I get one is the question? I don't want someone else's problem, an engine that was not cared for like mine. Should I accept the 126k one? Should I insist on a refurbished one? Can I find a new one somehow? Should I take what ever is available and sell the truck once I get it back? What should I be worried about? What shouldn't I be worried about? The 126k engine would come with a 12mo/12K mile warranty. I'd have warrantied mine for 200K .

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    Just bored!

What you want comes down to what you and the vendors insurance company can work out.

Keep pushing for a replacement new engine. You're right that you don't know the history of that 126k engine, unless it has a tear down. Keep pushing for it. They screwed up, not you. I wouldn't sell that truck. You obviously love it and took good care of it.

Thanks. I fully agree. Do you by chance know where a NEW engine can be sourced?
I see lots of used and rebuilds/refurbished but none new yet.

If you have to settle for a rebuild, that would be ok too, but make sure it comes from a good shop. Do some research. My neighbor got a rebuilt engine sourced and installed by the Toyota dealer and it failed within the warranty period. They replaced it again, and it failed again. This time outside the warranty, and they're not helping him.

As for new, I could only find this:

    Good luck.

Take the similar mileage used engine and warranty, be done with it, and keep driving the truck. Sounds like a fair resolution to me.

Maybe ask they toss a new timing belt in, but asking for a new engine on a 20 year old truck sure seems like stretch...

That sucks, fixable yes, resolution possible, but for the fact you have to break up a truck that would’ve likely gone another 200k easy. Sorry to hear

Trying to get a $4000 short block or a $6200 long block (damn their prices have gone up) from Yotashop seems unlikely. They probably offer a rebuild locally first.

I can see the dealer send the motor to a machine shop.
