Scotty Kilmer is the biggest clown on automotive YouTube, and that's saying something. One of very few accounts that I have completely blocked on YT

If a customer of his has an older vehicle with no major issues at the moment in time when Scotty happens to look at it, that model automatically becomes "reliable".

I think a few key things have been missed in this thread.

    1) small turbos are becoming popular because they perform better in the government’s mandated fuel economy test than larger displacement engines with similar output.
    2) Toyota’s new tech is typically first released in their Lexus brand, thus the taco if and when it’s gets a 4cyl turbo will not be a guinea pig
    3) while 4cyl turbos are more efficient at the low loads that are typical in the official fuel economy test, they do worse at higher loads.

Please correct me I made any incorrect statements. My memory of these facts is a bit stale.

He’s not shy about sharing his opinion, he has some great info here and there but I tend to not watch his videos, because a lot of the time you are getting HIS biased take on whatever he’s talking about, whether it be accurate or not. At the end of the day he’s trying to produce content, 5.48 million subs to his channel

I'm in genuine awe that people will sit down and watch YouTube for fun.

It's the modern version of public access UHF. Every once in a great while something will make you pause while channel surfing, but the vast majority is a reminder of why the invention of the home video camera was society's largest mistake.

Right! Another case and point about what I stated is I remember him showing how to fix a no-start condition caused by the alarm system. He never bothered to mention that what he was doing only applied to that particular, also unnamed, alarm system and made it seem as easy as flipping a switch (which definitely did not work for our Camaro).

I think we can pretty much rule out fuel economy as a reason to throw a turbo in the upcoming 4th gen drivetrain offering. So that leaves us with cost savings for the manufacturers as a reason for turbos, and residual income.

Moreover, It’s cheaper to make a 4cyl engine with a turbo than a six N/A engine, that will get you there with less issues.

But the point is, we’re not the winners here, we’re getting less but paying more. And It's probably ok to blame it on inflation

We're getting a 4 cyl but paying a 6 cyl price, if that makes any sense

They've been using turbo's in diesel engines forever. Ford started using them in small gas engines in 2011, that's 12 years ago. They did have some minor issues the 1st 2 years, but since about 2013 their turbo engines have been just as reliable as their non-turbo engines. The power difference is substantial. Fuel mileage empty is considerably better. Fuel mileage when towing or loaded heavy isn't any better than the 5.0 V8 and might be slightly worse. Compared to a gas engine from 20 years ago the turbo engines are more complex. But compared to a current non-turbo engine there just isn't much difference in complexity.

The biggest issue Ford had early on was letting the engine overheat when towing. The engine develops so much power at low rpm that the transmission wants to stay in higher gears when towing up mountains and overheats. Simply manually dropping down to a lower gear prevents this on older Ford's with the turbo engine. The newer trucks with 10 speed transmissions has all but eliminated that.

My F150 has the 5.0 V8, but if I buy another it will be one of the turbo engines. If Toyota can match Ford's reliability with a turbo I'll buy a Toyota.

I don't know it is valid comparison because diesel is compression ignition and is not subject to the knocking and need for richer fuel mixtures to cool it down and prevent the knock. From experience, I had a 1.9L Jetta Turbo diesel and the fuel economy didn't seem to suffer when driving it hard.
