I'd love a 2.0t sport Accord. I think they look sharp and I'll bet the gas mileage is great. I trust Honda to put some good effort into their turbo platform, they don't rush into things..

Great gas mileage and good power with the 10 speed auto transmission. Wife unit loves it as do I. We still have a 2004 Accord V6 and traded in a 2012 Accord V6 and all have had exceptional reliability.

They buy them but at what price? Have you seen how much value those F150’s lose after only a couple years as compared to our taco?

I’d much rather avoid that loss, as needs change and may need to sell earlier than 10 years without taking a bath.

Just say no, no turbo for me and walk off a winner

Scotty Kilmer was, maybe still is an auto mechanic. He know stuff about cars.
He did a video about Honda CRV's turbo I-4 oil dilusion problem. He is not a fan of the small turbo I-4 engine.

He said a lot things... including leaving Youtube forever, and then comes back, never buy this car or that car, then he buys one.
It is entertainment with some truth to it...

Scotty was born into the automotive service and repair industry:

“At age 14, he learned to be a mechanic from his grandfather, Elmer Kilmer, who was the chief mechanic at the Texaco gas station which Scotty's father owned…”

Some people in the industry may not like him because he exposes all the shenanigans in the industry, that may help the little guy willing to take heed and beware of what they’re buying.

This has been good for him

I liked seeing women in tube tops and mini skirts in the 70's but I don't think they are bringing them back either.

I’d rather watch Scotty then that kid on youtube tearing cars up recklessly on purpose and looking for his dads stolen bulldozer. Stupidity gets a big following on youtube.

If Ford had actually had a Ranger 4WD available, thats what I would have bought. The Tacoma has an artificially high resale, as well as asking price new.

I dont look at vehicles as an investment, it's a tool pure and simple for me. The Tacoma is a great truck, but it aint the only truck.

Yes-sort of. There is a 'sweet spot' for progress though. I suspect we are entering a 'bad era' for cars like it is 1977- this is referred to as the 'malaise' era of cars.

I remember when EFI became common in the mid 1980s. It was a bit scary-no one knew how to work on it. We bought a 1987 Mustang 5.0 for my mom (still have it!) and we almost did not because we couldn't adjust the carburetor with a screwdriver. Turns out that early EEC IV was a very good system. Cars got better and better until the early 2000s. There really has not been that much progress from the early 2000s until now except for tech (infotainment systems and driver safety) which is a mixed bag. Honestly I think the addition of active safety and adaptive cruise is great, but infotainment is not.

With the exception of infotainment (which is minimal on our trucks and the head units can even be replaced) our trucks are really close to being analog.

Now we are getting small turbos and start/stop. I think it is going to be remembered as a bad period until we go full electric and have a breakthrough in battery technology and charging time and convenience. Maybe 10-15 years from now.

Long story short, I am glad I have my 3rd gen. Would also like an IS 500. Should hold me over for 15 years.

The new chevys and fords hold up equally well, people are just being silly because this is TOYOTA Tacomaworld.

I'll admit that a lot of the things I see going "wrong" on Toyotas/Fords/Chevys have to do with the sort of bad QC that happened back then. Peeling paint, rattles, squeaky seats, I was talking to a guy at the Toyota dealer who said that his 2020 Tacoma's windshield came loose. One of our employees decided to take his Silverado work truck through the carwash and a bunch of the paint peeled off. It's 1980 all over again.

I think your thesis is pretty much spot on except for one thing. Cars now are somewhat safer than the early 2000s ones, even excluding active safety. But, like you, I would not be surprised if in 2050 this era of car making is known like late 1970s is today.

No, not Scotty, just a TOYOTA quality fan. But I’m sure he lurks around here and all the auto forums too lol!

That maybe true, but the 4.0l is a classic and just like Dolly Parton, the headlights still look good

Well, thanks to the new turbo power-train setup, the Ram now leads (ahem!) Tundra in reliability ratings

The Ranger has been a good truck in the past and has I think, earned a cult like following.

We had a Ranger many years ago that went under water up to the dash when one of the locations were it was stationed at flooded a number of vehicles. It was only a few days old, so the insurance totaled it and we bought it back, clean it it up, replaced all the ecms and it worked flawless for 10 yrs in fleet work, running errands all day before it started to show its age.

So yeah, my respects to the Ford Ranger lol!

You can invest in vehicles and actually make money, some do, but that’s no my area of competence, so its a tool to me also and the reason I wouldn’t buy a used Taco, is the same, too much money

Again, nobody ever said it does. Don't put words in my mouth.

If course a turbo adds complexity, and can add potential for failure. But, there are plenty of reliable turbo engines. And, there are plenty of unreliable N/A engines.

Personally, I'd rather take my chances with a turbo 4 than the 3.5. Just my opinion.

I think I understand your perspective, but you've had your head in the sand if you think vehicles haven't progressed much since the early 2000s.

To clarify, you wrote “I think the argument is that a turbo doesn't guarantee an unreliable engine, which is true.”
And to that my response was “A turbo doesn’t guarantee equal reliability either.”
I think my use of “either” led you to believe I was saying you had claimed that. which was not my intent. Hope that clarifies. :)

I can stand Scotty about as much as Whistlin' Diesel; which is to say I can't stand either for longer than 30 seconds. Ryan from Fortnine has made it impossible for me to watch poorly edited and shot content. Toyota had 4 cylinder turbo truck engines starting almost 40 years ago in North America. They were great. I can only imagine they've gotten even better. Would I buy a first or second year model? Nope. But I'd buy one.
