wait, don't people weld on sliders and do front body mount relocations? both which involve welding?

They do, but it compromises the frame. It can affect how the frame reacts in a future accident. Front frame rail modifications can affect the timing of the air bags too. Even an aftermarket front bumper reinforcement can change the timing of the air bag deployment. Srs system and the frame were all designed around factory parts and parameters.

In the eyes of Toyota, it would be a liability if they approved of shops heating up and welding on their frames. Especially in critical crumple zones like the front frame rails.

Here is a video from Honda below on what can happen when not using original collision parts.

Jeez It seems like people talk about these trucks like its a fighter jet that if it doesnt have the correct bolt installed it will drop out of the sky. Liability changes a lot, but man people been welding in floor panels and every other kind of patch on cars for 100 years. Is the frame made out of unobtanium or something?

Thats an end piece of the frame that just holds some bumper pieces together, its not like he is shortening the frame or chopping the top.

I think alot of the scare is promoted by people that have never held a torch or raw piece of metal in their lives. Live a little ;)

    FALSE FALSE FALSE

The HSS used in the frame and body is not heat treated at all. Stop spreading that lie. It's an alloy with high tensile strength that allows them to bend a frame and body panels out of thinner sheets of metal.

Heat treated metal doesn't flex, it will shatter if bent. Who's going to build a truck frame like that? Let's use some common sense here.

I'm not seeing where it says it can't be welded. I do see that it can't be heated to stress relieve for straightening.
How are cold straightening pulling aids attached to a frame? Genuinely ignorant and curious...CRIB 136 implies they are welded on.

I know next to nothing about welding. How does toyota weld brackets and other parts when making the frame without compromising the steel? Are they heat treating it afterwards or using 'frkin lasers'?

How's the shop going to fix it? Using a small torch, a bfh, a grinder, and a welder. If you are lucky, they will have a can of spray paint available too.
Want to prevent heat transfer, use heat block putty inside and outside the section to draw out heat and keep it localized. Unless there is other severe damage, I don't see a frame replacement for a non-critical section.

Heat treated doesn't mean hardened. Don't confuse a term to manipulate the physical properties of steel in many ways with one kind of heat treatment that makes steel very hard.

Funny, a properly heat treated knife can be bent to 90 degrees and return to true (see American Society of Bladesmiths, Master Smith qualification). Heat treat can do a lot of different things to steel depending on alloy, temperatures (intentionally plural) used, dwell times, and cooling methods.

So, give proof (i.e. statement from Toyota) that it is a lie.

I think it’s worth clarifying my take.

If this is my own truck? I don’t bother with an insurance claim. I’ll handle the repairs myself , I’m more than capable, I’d bash that piece of the frame back, fire up my Miller and not give it a second thought.

However if OP is doing an insurance claim it’s much different and should be treated differently.

This is an old thread, which I don't usually like to revive without good reason, but I will say that Toyota does in fact sell parts of the frame separately for repair, just because there is damage doesn't mean the entire frame is replaced. The part in the original post that was damaged is sold separately, part number 51021-04022.

    s-l1600.jpg

Welding this portion of the frame is an approved procedure, and Toyota provides the instructions on how to do so in their collision repair manual.
