@daveeasa @Puppypunter I just ordered one of these from the square site. If it's an option, I'd love to pay for the fastest shipping possible; maybe a separate paypal purchase? If not, all good, I just probably won't have it before my next trip. Who needs visible brake lights anyway.... ;)

    Don’t Be Me!!
    It’s obvious, now.
I’ve never had the need to replace or mess with my actual taillight bulbs, or I might have been more aware. In any case…

    Me, to @daveeasa :

Hi, today I received a couple items from you for wiring my snugtop to my 2020 Tacoma. On the brake light tap… it’s a vaguely triangular type plug & socket… I’ve pulled my drivers taillight and crawled underneath the back end, but can’t readily locate where I insert this tap? Please advise, and thanks for answering what will likely turn out to be semi-obvious.

    @daveeasa in reply:

Brake is the middle red bulb, reverse on bottom, turn on top. Squeeze and remove the OEM female connector from the bulb base. Insert the T in between and reconnect.

    Me, to @daveeasa :

Thanks! Got it. My stumble was not realizing the modular/separation aspect on the brake light bulb connector. I’d noticed the matching wiring colors, so went underneath the truck looking for a connection further up the harness.

@Puppypunter Would like to order the 3rd brake light harness, but it doesn't accept my address on the checkout page. (I'm in Canada) - any idea what's up ?

OK...not a brake tap question but a 3rd brake light question. I installed the plug-n-play brake tap (thanks PuppyPunter) and all was good until the 3rd brake light burned out. Ordered replacement on eBay, reconnected, and all was good. However, less than a month later the 3rd brake light is apparently burned out again. The paired dome light powered from the battery works fine. Could there be an issue with the voltage going to the light? Its fused between the tap and the 3rd brake light but I dont think that could be the source of the problem. Perhaps its just a trash light.

The brake light burning out, it's on your topper? Or the OEM one on the cab? I assumed topper based on what you describe. And the fuse isn't blowing up, just the bulb is burning out? Is it halogen or LED? Link to the specific product?

I haven't heard of this happening but perhaps an alternate product might work better? Many (most?) of us have hard/soft topper shell 3rd brake lights which work properly using brake T's.

Its the brake light/dome light combo on the shell. Toast after about a month.

    Here is the part: https://www.ebay.com/itm/323594346420
The fuse is intact and the dome light works, so it has to be the LED strip. Will test it and try to get another one assuming its dead.

@JWestie check your grounds. Make sure they are making good contact. Did you use the ground in the brake tap? Or did you go to chassis? Usually what causes LEDs to fail prematurely is over voltage, so it’s hard to say for sure, but sometimes a ground or even a crimp that wasn’t so great can cause a rise in resistance, which could cause it. If you want to be safe, I’ll happily swap your tap as well. Just shoot me a PM. It’s unlikely for sure, but sometimes these things can be hard to catch. If you have a multimeter and a spare leg (like attached to a wife or kid or something), you could try getting a voltage reading at the brake light as well. Usually 2% is great, 5% is acceptable as far as a variance. So get a reading at the brake light (with truck running) and get a reading at the battery. Divide one reading by the other, and if it is not 0.95-1.05, then we could look at a few other things. But if you want to just try swapping the tap, we can do that too

There's 31 pages worth of stuff. and maybe the initial post needs to get updated - I'm looking to tap into running lights / brake lights / reverse lights. Am I in the right place, can this harness do all of that?

The web site says "parking lights". Is that = "running lights"?

Yes, in laymans terms running lights == parking lights. I think parking lights is the more precise term but hey, tomato, tomato.

For a 3rd gen Tacoma there is also a reverse T which is independent from the brake T because they are different bulbs/connectors on the taillight. For 2G Tacoma it's one 6 position connector so possible to tape multiple signals with a single T.

There's no real "this harness" more like a slew of harnesses. The brake connector specifically only has brake, parking light and ground, it's a 3 position triangular one for 3G Tacoma.

I’m about to order a brake tap to wire in the 3rd brake light on my new to me leer cap.

I’m also trying to wire in the factory dome light in the cap. Is there a factory bed light harness tap that exists to run the dome light off? It would be so nice to have it work with the bed light switch settings.
