On my older Tacoma .. I got a remote start for Christmas .. worth every dime. It sayed running if you opened the door and only shut off when you pressed the brake pedal like to shift .. that kept it from being stolen. I seem to remember if you put the key in and turned it on it stayed running. I thought that was a good compromise.

Keyed models still work that way. Not entirely sure why they can't make something like that work with the push button models. Although it may be just their work around since they haven't figured out how to disable the truck when the key fob isn't present. If you start your truck manually and walk away, anyone can jump in it and it'll just drive away without issue. You'll get a warning about no fob being detected, but the truck will function as normal until you shut it off. Although this issue isn't unique to Toyota. I first learned of it with a Chevy Silverado.

Not totally accurate. I had a 2017 Nissan Murano. It had keyless remote with fob. You could remote start it and it would stay running if you opened doors. Would stop if you touched brake pedal. Would keep running if you pushed brake pedal and start button at the same time. Could even keep it running if you left car running, closed door and locked door with fob. There are things Nissan has better than Toyota. This was not meant to start a Toyota vs Nissan thing, just for info.

I could be wrong but I believe Dodge also does this. Although Dodge vehicles are (or were) stolen quite often so I imagine they evolved to have this feature as another deterrent.

That's not how the remote start works though. You can't just hop in and drive away if you happen to get the door open. Mines glitched on me twice and let me in with the car still running. As soon as you hit the brake it dies.

Correct. That's Toyota's workaround safety feature. As I stated, you can get in your truck, start it, and walk away and someone else can drive it away. The remote start auto-shut off is their workaround for it. The models with keys won't do this though. They'll function in a traditional manner where it'll shut off, only if you don't put the key in first. Therefore you can start it and load it without the engine shutting off or someone driving away.

I think we're saying the say thing. I was just adding that opening the door isn't all the kills the engine. Hitting the brake will also if you're able to get in a remote started pts truck. My point more being that Toyota could have made this work just as safely without shutting the engine off but decided not to for whatever reason.

Owning one of these trucks that cuts off upon opening the door of, I'm not a fan of that. My 2012 Dodge Ram remote starts and does not do that. Wish the Taco would stay running......

The only annoying thing about it for me is if I'm making multiple trips to load up the truck and I want it to keep warming up. Is it possible to start it without pressing the brake pedal once I'm standing by the truck? Like, is it possible to do the trick where you put the fob right up against the ignition button and hit the button to start it without pressing the pedal? Or does that trick require the pedal to be depressed?

I believe the pedal always has to be pressed. I believe that's pretty common with push-to-start vehicles in general.

The start system on mine will let you do basically that. It's a Compustar remote start. Once it's started with the fob, it'll stay running unless I hit the brake pedal prior to inserting the key and turning it. So typically, I'll start it, hop in, key into the ignition - turn it to on position so everything else is on, and I'm good to go.

My wife’s Honda Accord also allows you to keep it running by pressing the brake and start button. It also automatically puts the air conditioning/heating to 72° so you don’t have to remember to set it the day before. That’s nice also.

I will have to try this. I was not aware. But then again, I've never put much thought into it because I've always just used the brake pedal.

Press once, wait a second or two, press again and hold for 15 seconds; works on my ‘19.
Easier to just press the brake with your other hand while leaning in, but handy if you’re in the passenger seat for whatever reason

The new 2024 Tacomas don’t have this “safety kill switch” anymore! Saw a video yesterday. Glad they finally realized that every other manufacturer had it figured out

Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
    I mean...just saying...

Officially coming in EDIT - LATE JUNE and will be offered along side the current kits as this one will have a slightly higher price for the premium option. It is a completely different setup and isn't something that can be updated to any of our current offerings or ones currently installed out in the field. It will, however, accept the same smart module/phone app device that we've been selling for years and still continue to sell currently.

Released at the same time will be select models/years and trims of the: 4Runner, Tundra, RAV4, Landcruiser, and a few other select models.

...we've had this for a good minute but wanted to ensure that we're doing it the safe and right way so our original way from 4 years ago was ultimately scrapped as we weren't comfortable that it would be fail safe for any and all given scenarios not to mention, it was slightly complicated. We have had the video of it (with a smart module in that video) on our YouTube channel since 2019 demonstrating that we know what we're doing - but due to liability from a software standpoint on takeover, we didn't want to awaken the big monster; Toyota Corp.
