exactly. it's not SPs responsibility to close your tent well.

 

I double-checked my coverage and the X1 is covered under custom equipment for $15k, about $40 per month extra.

 

What insurance company are you with?

 

I have Allstate.

 

State Farm just wanted a receipt for the X1 and put it on, no change in prem.
(not that they haven't gotten their blood from stone in other areas).

 

Update on damaged tent from contact with struts. SP was fast on responding and we trouble shouted through a few things and it appeared the the bracket the strut was attached to was slightly bent in towards the tent. Gently bending it out with a wrench seems to work and I hit it with a fine file to smooth the sharp edges. It seems to work. No more contact with the tent. I’m not sure how it got bent in or was always like that. I’ll repair the tent damage and I’m just happy it won’t continue to rub and get worse. Thanks for everyone’s input and maybe you might want to check your own brackets.

 

Wanted to give everyone a full run-down of my X1. Many thanks to everyone that posted in this thread with the ideas that sparked this build.

First off, let me explain the WHY of how I planned out the build... About a year ago, I went on an off-road camping trip up to Alabama Hills (Eastern Sierra's in California near Mt Whitney) in late October. The wind was ripping at a good 30mph, temps were in the mid 30's and it was raining slightly. After a miserable evening and night, we decided to pack up and head home a few days early. Hanging out in the evening was a shiver-fest and I ended up sleeping in the back seat of my Tundra with one of my dogs. At that point I knew I needed something "inside" like an RV, but with the stupid 55mph speed limits in CA for trailers, I didn't want to have to drive so slow or risk the tickets. That is when I decided to build out a "topper" into a small living area where I could hang out at night in inclement weather and not be concerned about the many fire bans we seem to have all too often. I also wanted something where I could sleep up in the tent portion while my dogs slept downstairs.

So, without further ado, here is my rig... 2018 Tundra SR5 with ADS shocks (2.5s with remote resi in front and 3x bypass in back), Deaver springs, full armor (RCI and P&P), White-Knuckle sliders, Camburg front bumper (with winch), SS Built high clearance rear bumper, Vision 18in wheels with 295/70/18 (35in) Cooper STT Pro tires.

As stated in my last post, I really wanted a place to "hang out" in bad weather, so I knew I wanted some sort of couch, as well as some storage, and I knew I wanted everything to be a bit modular. First step was to build a nice platform for the couch. The base cushions came from Lowes/HomeDepot, but the rear portion are "custom". The base is a triangular cushion from Amazon, and the covers for them are Sunbrella material from Coversandall.com. Coversandall is a great company, and they were actually CHEAPER than crappy amazon ones I looked at. Maybe $25 each? They are super sturdy material and should last a long time.


I have the base cushions in two sections bc I have some hinged access points in the base platform.



On the left is wheel-well storage, and on the right is access to a 180AH LiFO house battery (big enough to run the fridge for a few days AND charge my Ebike.



You can also see that I integrated a 5G water can into the back... Many thanks to the guy that posted about the USB pumps for water dispensing!!
That area over on the left is where I do my cooking when I'm inside.

As you can see, I created a pivoting mount for the water pump so I can have it dispense from the outside, inside, or pushed back out of the way for more room. The mounts are made for speakers, but I connected them to each other with a piece of bamboo scrap I had for my custom cutting-board. It is stainless steel on one side (protect stuff from the heat of the stove) and bamboo on the other. Both sides are from Amazon and I had to cut and bond the steel side to the bamboo side with Sika-Flex. The stove fits right inside the pot and it lives in the wheel-well cubby when not in use. I also made a custom side-mount board for the 5lb propane tank and for the water dispenser. Getting the holes lined up to match the riv-nuts on the X1 was a PITA!!! I like this solution better than the SP molle panels though bc it really doesn't obstruct my view from inside and lets me pivot the water for inside/outside access. Speaking of the Riv-nuts, I also used them to add some cupholders along the base so my frothy beverages don't spill.

Nice build so far! I like the creative use of space above the SP window for the electrical panel.

 

Ok, so to continue...

I built an electronics board for the back. It sits high enough that I don't bang my head on anything when sitting on the couch. Again, getting it drilled out to match the Riv-nuts was a huge PITA, but it worked in the end. Most of the wires are hidden behind it for a cleaner look.
Left to right, I have a 1500w inverter, Red-Arc BCDC1250, Auxbeam switch-panel (which I have yet to use) with 60amp cutoff breaker, and my bus-bars. Everything is grounded via a MONSTER 0-2 gauge cable.
I can get 50 Ah per hour from the alternator using the BCDC and I also have 400w of solar running into it. The BCDC prioritizes the solar input over the alternator when both are running (it uses ALL the solar and then draws whatever it needs from the alternator to reach the 50amp max capacity).



All that power is more than enough to run a 60L National Luna dual zone fridge:


I couldn't believe how $$ the tilting sliders are for fridges, but this one from DFG Offroad is sized specifically for this fridge, so I bit the bullet and shelled out for it.


The tilting slider is needed bc of the wheel-well, and the storage I integrated into the build...

And my food and cooking gear go in two large Tupperware boxes under the couch:

Here is another nifty idea I came up with to give me better access to the bed area up top; a step that mounts to my bedrails. By adding the piece under the step, it transfers my weight from a downward to outward load. That way it won't deform/move when I stand on it.





And as far as miscellaneous items, I also installed two multi-port USB chargers and two cigarette style plugs. The USB outlets have various cables running along the interior channels so I can charge my lighting (LuminAid lights), and the two cigarette outlets power a 12v heated blanket as well as my Caframo 12v fan. Sticking with the fan, I mounted it to a thin piece of plywood with velcro on the back (hook side of the velcro) and I have TWO spots in the X1 where it can mount. One underneath the sliding portion of the bed platform for when I'm on the couch, and another in the upper portion of the pop-up for sleeping. Here is the velcro mount in the upper tent:




Another nice touch (in my opinion) is the fitted sheet for the ExPed mattress. First thing I did was tie-dye it in a Japanese Shibori style:

 

Thanks... It took a lot of energy and frustration to get that mounted. That is probably bc I did it solo. If I had someone else there to hold it while I screwed it in, it would have been a bit easier.

Sounds sorta like what prompted me to order the X1. Except I spent years dealing with cold windy nights where I'd end up sleeping in the drivers seat rather than set up my tent or bivy. Rather than a couch I went the easy route and just use my camp chair inside. : )

You might find that the SP isn't that great in high winds. There have been a few times even when parking facing into the wind it has been so noisy on the tent, and rocking the whole truck, that I've put the tent away and just slept on the cabinet. I built it flush with the fridge so I can use it as a stealth sleeping platform when I'm not somewhere I can deploy the tent. But it serves the purpose when winds are bad too. But yeah in just normal cold/wind being able to hang out inside out of the wind is awesome.

 

The wind rocking hte vehicle is something that every RTT has issues with, especially rigs with a lot of suspension... that's why I've been contemplating getting a set of those scissor jacks used to stabilize RV's. Pop them under my rock-sliders and hopefully that will reduce some of the "sway".

 

To be honest, the times wind has been strong enough to rock the truck the noise of the tent flapping and rustling was by far the bigger issue. Don't think ear plugs would even help.

 

Hey all, eyeing this camper as I work seasonally in fire and think it would be a great living solution. Also the ultimate Baja surf camper.

two questions that are very different.
Has anyone done the financing thru Affirm that SP now offers? I haven’t been able to find a run down and haven’t heard back from SP.

2nd is more random as I contemplate a buildout. Has anyone played around with a table that sits level with the bedrails but is outside the bed. Essentially using the side hatch as an awning? Seems like a cool way to have a cook table but out of the way

Tried searching the forum and the SP website, but does anyone have a height of the camper "sleeping area" when its open. On the back end/tallest side.

 

It used to be on their website, but I can't find it anymore. I think it was 60" (5') from the bottom of the sleeping area to the top when fully open.

 

Here’s a lock with a rubber bumper to keep it from rattling. Works great.
